I'm waiting until the post of "I switched from a Delco 65 amp alternator to a 30 amp Ford generator and now at night while I am out cruising around town my lights go so dim at low speeds I can't see good, what do I do?" There is a price that goes with being what you see as cool. I've got one rig out here that gets a generator, That because nothing on the car will look "new" as I want it to look like an old race car rather than a hot rod or what ever. The second things that if it ever goes more than a hundred miles from the house it will be riding on the trailer. The whole idea is that unless you are really in the know you won't have an idea of when it was built or that it was built out of a crazy mix match of unrelated parts. I think the generator of choice is the same one you are putting on that car though.
I used to have a 1962 Ford F-100 as daily driver. Had original 30amp generator and european style H4 headlights (55W low beam / 60W high beam), which take little more than US style sealed beams. Cold winter starts, only 3 mile drive to work with lights on and heater full speed. Never had any issue, kept battery full just fine. Only thing i noticed, was when idiling at stop light, heater fan rpm went down slightly. But it was same story with my 67 Chevy with alternator or any car i have had. My experience is that generator is ok for old cars with only few accessories, if it and regulator is in good working condition.
Thanks for the input and realize that there are drawbacks on the gen vs the alternator. I am the one that is rebuilding the gen so know exactly what is inside. Relays for both high and low beams. I am the one that is wiring the car so will know that the sufficient gage wire will be used. I have no users, no radio, no heater, no AC, no power windows, no power door locks, etc. Having gone this route before, I ordered a heavy duty voltage regulator from a local automotive electrical overhaul facility who will test the gen and adjust the regulator as a pair. Generators worked for many years and yes they were replaced with alternators for many reasons. I was careful not to modify the bracket and can switch back to the alternator on the side of the road if necessary.
Hey Roger, just a thought but you might want to pull those avs2 tags off the carbs if you wanna ‘clean’ the ‘new stuff’ off the car.
Here one alternator https://www.speedwaymotors.com/GM-D...t=Speedway Motors (New) (UppedBidsMar17_2018)
Your solution looks good and I believe you'll have more than enough power for what you're running. Nice work!
MY opinion that means very little is I like everything in that picture despite the newer carbs ( I have them to ) BUT the generator. It is big and really detracts from all the cool stuff you got going on in that engine bay . Yes it looks old and correct but it really detracts from the package IMO and my opinion means little . I suspect if it was painted and such it would look better but it really dominates the look of the rest of the cool stuff going on there . I really like the air cleaner tops what make and such are they?
In your face as a friend says regarding generators. Have to remove the Edelbrock signage. I am not sure on the air cleaners as they were on the car when I bought it.
Its growing on me LOL . Why I like it better in these pics I don't know . I was actually wondering if there was any Carter type AFB or compe***ion plus type plates out there one could replace the Edelbrock emblems with . I have a pair of 500's on a Ridge Runner tunnel ram and they look off with the Edelbrock finish and tags .
Carter AFB Compe***ion Series carburetor decorative badge SW04S113AFB | eBay I had to look Badges to make them look like Carter compe***ion series carbs but I guess that would make them two new also HMMMM
Too late now, maybe for the next guy. I got the 11" number from the interweb. Probably the box it comes in. I threw a tape on one today (didn't look like 11" in the flesh), it was 8". Sorry, Mike
Delco tractor generators are shorter than car generators . You will not get the out put that you may need from a generator . And you have to wire up a voltage regulator as well . Good luck Rich..
but i retired from doing it. lol. steiner turf tractors use kubota engines, the alternators are small. p/n 16241-46012 ALTERNATOR. ebay $70.00 i think the real early steiners were shorter. but i would have to back to where i worked for more info
kobuta tractors have an alternator that puts out as much as 40 amps and will fit in front of 3 deuces on a flathead.
Good to know. I don’t need the amps as it’s a hot rod so no AC, power windows, power locks, big stereo, electric fan, electric fuel pump etc. Plus I wanted a gen for the look. 30 amps is more then what I need
You can still get the old cal custom style chrome generator covers for that Ford generator. One of those would look right at home on there.
