Technical Shot myself in the foot and now I need a unisteer or redo my motor mounts

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 31Vicky with a hemi, Jan 9, 2015.

  1. During mock ups everything fit. Then I decided to move the engine forward so the fire wall wasn't recessed so deep. That spawned the water pump riser and fan issue which was all figured out. Then I built these really *****ing motor mounts.
Anyways, now in trying to mount my vega steering box , it wants to be right in the motor mount.

I can't see anyway around this one but a unisteer or loose my motor mounts
    **** !!! Where's the tequila ?

I am really glad to hear I'm not the only one who makes mistakes like that. Thank you and good luck.

  3. Yeah, it's been a while for a good old fashioned Friday night thread

  4. Can you lower the box a bit, I had some issues when I laid mine out and solved it by hanging the Vega mount down about 2 inches. Just above the scrub line. 001340.jpg HAMB plus Engine 010.jpg pics 075.jpg 000800.JPG

I like to reverse bend the pitman arm plus retaper it so the tie rod end is on top. This allows the box to be mounted severly nose down which lowers the main housing. It also straightens the steering shaft. I bend the arm so it is exacty reverse from stock. Maybe this would help.

  8. The mounts go deep into the frame.

How much would you have to move the box back?
    Or down?

Would it look bad having the steer box up 2" also?

  11. With that engine mount , down 4" and back 2" roughly.
If I redo the mount to ontop of the frame, I can just scoot right underneath it.

I even tried an FJ box all the way back with the bell crank up front NFG there x2

The box pictured looks like a 525 box, an actual Vega box is slightly smaller which would help.

I know its not the way you planned it out, but you could always revert back to side steer with a drag link to the left spindle.

  16. Oh yeah, of course. Lol.
So I'm going to get drunk and think on how to get myself out of this mess.
Maybe I'll stretch the frame up front, move the axle and get the room. Sometimes this looks a little short up front anyway.

Side steer would be all in the headers.
Yes that is a 525 because the blue guys or gnomes didn't put my vega box where it should go and it's suffering from walking parts syndrome.
How the hell can anyone loose a steering box?

Can you flip the mounts upside down and side to side to mount them higher on the frame?

i think i'd just build some new engine mounts with the steering box mounted in the desired location. (probably ***** about it the whole time)

those are some nice looking mounts, i'm sure you could build an even nicer pair next time.

  20. Well that bites! I'm going to ***ume your using a right side spindle with 2 tapered eyes . One for tie rod and rear most for cross steer link. If this is correct you might consider a bronko type tie rod end. It will connect the steering link direct to the tie rod and give you another 1" to 1.5" forward movement for the steering box. See Speedway part #910-02999 I can get you a photo of one installed and an actual number if interested.

I vote for the unisteer. I replaced a vega with the unisteer. Unisteer wins hands down. Quicker, more responsive, less effort. A little spendy, but it only hurts once.

Don't let the tail wag the dog. Mount the steering properly then re-do the engine mounts. You made them once, you can do it again.

I can't believe you even mentioned , gag, Unisteer...really? Mount the box where it needs to be as suggested and redo that mount only. The sooner you get after it the sooner it will be done...Unisteer...lol

So what is it about a vega box that is more traditional than a unisteer box, which is a vastly superior steering system.

I'm with those that have suggested putting the box where intended and redoing the mount as needed. I had a similar thought to Paul in post 17.....flipping the mount looks like it would provide the needed room. The engine portion of the mount may need modification to shorten and/or change angle.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery

You started this thread three hours ago. You could have had the new mounts nearly done by now.

  28. Yeah but she had plans tonight remember ?

You've got no idea what's into them mounts. Lots of ****ing around, sooo much and they are polished for chrome

Haha, I'm just giving you ****, man. I've been in similar situations before.

If I'm not mistaken, wasn't a bottle of tequila what started this whole mess to begin with? Something about you and the ol' lady "enjoying some tequila and the engine hoist" or something like that?

I'd rather use the rope steering from a old soap box derby car
