I guess the point behind all these posts is that some lifters need bleed and others don't. I'd follow the instructions from the manufacture of the lifters.

This is like the scene in Johnny Dangerously when he's in jail, and he gets the message through the grapevine, the question was about small block chevy's
not non adjustable rocker arm motors

I am having the exact problem on a 62 Chevy 327. Lifters expanded and will not compress after adjusting rockers. Is there a way to bleed the lifters inside the engine?

  4. I put 'em in dry. Here is my prelube system. rotate the crankshaft 15deg and twist the drill a few times at each setting 'til rockers bleed. Long shaft has notch in bottom to intersect the hemi oil pump. It is long 'cause I didn't want to cut the rod. I realize everyone doesn't have a brace!! No need to spin the pump with a drill. This pumps it up to pressure relief and pumps plenty of oil thru the system.

  5. Are you sure they aren't mechanical/solid lifters? I have always filled SBC hydraulic lifters before installation then pre-lubed the engine before starting without ever having an issue. Are you running hollow pushrods? Is the top end (rockers) getting oil? Oil passes through the lifters and pushrods on the way to the rockers.

I don't understand how you can have a problem ...

Here's a procedure I've used on the last couple SBC's I've put together. It's kind of long but I think it's good to take the extra few minutes and not skip through and miss an important point or two.

So far, no problems on start up when I've followed the procedure in the video. But, maybe this procedure wouldn't work on an engine that oils differently from a SBC?
