It's true that the seller should be able to get a bonded ***le if it previously had a Texas ***le. But - It must have a motor, frame and body.

Also, the bond will be based on the bluebook value of a restored similar vehicle times 1.5. For my rusty, non-running 48 Dodge pickup I did a couple months ago it was valued at $9000, bond was $13,500. Cost was a little over $200. Minimum bond cost is $100. You can get an appraisel from 1 licensed dealer, then they'll go by that. You also must get it inspected by an auto theft unit in a police department. Took about 3 months from start to finish on mine.

It's unlikely you'll get the seller to do all this. If he was interested in getting top dollar, he'd already have a ***le, and as others have mentioned, some states are much easier (Like Kansas, where nothing more than a bill of sale is needed) and he can sell it to one of them without going through this.

You, as the buyer, can also get a Texas bonded ***le as a non-resident if the vehicle was ever ***led in Texas. If you can get someone to run the numbers you should be able to find that out. But you'd end up going there and spending maybe a week messing with it.

AM i nutz? Why is everyone concerned about ***les for cars built prior to 1974?
    there were only reggies then,
stroll down to the local DMV,
tell them you bought a car 7 yaers ago and lost all the paperwork incliding the bill of sale, you will get an avidavit to send to the previous ownwer, return reciept,
(who of course is now your cousin) he denies it and it comes back, take it unopened back to dmv, in 30 days you get a reg in your name, move forward..
cars without reggies are automatticly 50% cheaper than asking price..

  3. I buy cars without ***les all the time. Of course I live in NH where we don't need no stinkin ***le on anything over 15 years old. No **** about having to be complete. What we use is a VIN verification form. It lists the owners name & address, VIN number, year make & model, etc. It needs to be signed by either a DMV cop, licensed dealer or a licensed state inspection station (me). That's it. Done deal. Show them that & get your plates. Oh yeah, no mandatory insurance or state sales tax either. "Live Free or Die"... Fantasy Factory your info is fine for someone living in your state but the laws are different in every state in the country. What works here in NH won't work anywhere else. The only possibility would be if someone told their DMV they bought the car in NH and had a notarized bill of sale & one of these forms from someone who lives here AND if their state would accept that paperwork as proof of ownership. These threads come up all the time and every single time there's a ton of opinions from everybody and the truth of the matter is the only usefull advice is from someone in the SAME state who has been there & done it already. Everything else is just bench racin. One thing to note on the NH form I posted a ****ty pic of.. There are 3 boxes that refer to the VIN tag that say "altered, changed or missing". If any of those boxes are checked you will get a visit from a State Trooper. If you come into my shop to have that form signed and have one of those "reproduction" VIN tags some guys are selling I will be forced to check the box that says "changed" I have no clue how some guys are getting away with using those unless they are just hoping nobody with any authority ever looks. Seems like a great way to get your car impounded to me.. I know my pic ****s but there is also some fine print in the lower right corner that mentions the penalty for making a false statement on the form as being a cl*** B felony.

Forget about it in M***achusetts, hope your state is more lenient.

  5. as statede, check with your state..they are all different..other wise this thread has run it's course;)

  6. You were lucky in New York being a non ***le state back then. Michigan has been a ***le state since the 1940's at least. A friend bought a '41 Chevy from the original owner in 1969 and was given a ***le dating from back then. He never picked the car up, it was later resold by the previous owner's estate without the ***le sometime in the early 70's.

After my friend p***ed, I was asked to help with the dispersion of his posessions. I did look for that ***le, but could never find it.

I too have registered vehicles in both Michignanand New Mexico without ***les, both of these states were not too bad, but I did get some runaround from New Mexico due to interpertation of how to proceed with paperwork by various MVD employees. A call to Santa Fe, a name of a clerk in ***ling and his phone number cleared it all up for the branch office employees.

  7. do it. ***les can be gotten after you jump thru a hoop or two......

  8. Does this mean they'll make you put front brakes on it ? :p

"My other option is find a clear ***le that I can register and make the ch***is fit the discription on the ***le. With that solution there's a bit of 'manipulating of the facts' implied, but I will do it if I need to. In the end nobody will know it but me anyhow. Who knows, with my Model A ch***is, in the end it might be a Reo, or a Dodge Brothers, or a Chivvy, or a Nash. The radiator emblem and cowl/dashboard will be the defining factor anyhow, because the motor will get all of the attention and no state uses the motor in a hot rod as a defining factor (other than 'lost ***le' proceedure) :D "

Except that this is illegal and can get you jail time and a felony on your record. Somehow I don't think it's worth it.
