Everyone has an opinion but yours is the only one that counts! That said, I would leave it till your ready to do the full blown paint you really want. I don't like primer at all. If the car hasn't gone to dust in the past 70 years or so a couple of more years isn't going to make ANY difference in the metal. On a personal note, I have a shinny car and a unpainted car and they both get the same amount of attension but the unpainted car is more fun cause I don't worry about parking it and walking off!
Leave the patina for the chest of drawers or a hope chest. This is rust and it has to go! Some folks are too much into the Road Warrior **** with leaving them rusted, oh sorry, covered in Patina! That link with the paint for $70 bucks worth looking into! If not, there is always the Duke Of Earl! Earl Sheib that is!
I say leave it until you are ready to do it right. I see no sense in stripping it and putting paint on it that will not be the final finish then painting over substandard paint or primer which has been out in the elements and getting grease and dirt all over it. if you just want it to look different until you put shiney on it just paint over the patina and strip it all off when the time comes for finished paint and bodywork.
I was in the same toss up with my truck, but I like the way she looks with some semi gloss primer on her, or a base coat of something...my 2....
I think the car will look great with color on it, but I LOVE the patina. I say leave it, but I don't own it.
Where's the bacon option? HAHAHAHA I like it how it is, but I think it would look better with suede. I would find an unusual color to do it in though, like a burgundy, royal blue, orange etc.
I've always gone smooth and shiny, but never had big bucks ether,so did it my self. Can't understand all the talk about cost,ya can get shiny that looks and seals better as cheep as primer as long as your not going for two part stuff etc. Letting it keep rotting/rusting [so called patina] sure is not my idea of any thing that ever looked good, but seems to be a trend now and no way I can understand how "rust, cracks, holes, dents, needs fixing " looks good to anyone All the work and time in building a rod and letting any parts keep rusting?,I'm never going to get rat rod trend at all am I. It's sure great that your going to save this baby the rite way i hope.
Schmick car man. Of the options, I voted for primer but maybe something different from the black, red oxide look. Mid green maybe but definitely sealed underneath. Whatever you do, it's yours so just have fun!!
Man.....I'd like to take the word "patina" right out of the hot rod dictionary......Rust is the enemy.....always has been..... I'd say paint it.....there's ways to do it without costing more than seal and primer.....
Here is one from the Boise area. It was a 4 door sedan chopped and converted to the Vicky look in the rear. Very little body work was done to the welds and then powder coated clear. You get all kinds of comments. Most ask what color it is going to be. Some just scratch their heads and roll their eyes. Lots of different colors going in this car
Patina is ********!!! Everyone talks about traditional, look at your old photos. How many cars do you see covered in rust? Look at all the old Rod&Customs, or Car Crafts, how many cars do you see in primer? Wait until you have the money, or time, or skill to paint the damn thing properly. Primer is an unfinished car. Patina is biker ****...JMHO Thanks, Mike
the sealer that ppg offers is desighned to keep your body work from "popping out" from under your paint job. The last step after priming and blocking before you lay the paint. Kind of suprised nobody uses the sealer before laying the final paint here ? ? ? I am all down with the single stage Omni enamle paints [ or what Zman mentioned]. but would never NOT use sealer under paint job.
They make colored primers now, that have a semi gloss finish. They look Kool, my truck gets a lot more attention now. But you will miss the patina. I noticed that I worry more about scraches and chips now that I have primer on the truck. Before when it was in Reservation 4 tone it was drive drive and drive some more. To hell with road debris. Thats just my opinion...
I don't want to steal this post, but I'm asking myself the same question. It's a "love-hate" thing. People just roll their eyes when I say the truck's done for awhile. I need to start messing with their heads a little more. I can visualize the truck in color. But what color? Thanks Gary
yea, that's why like it so much. it's real subtle. almost looks like bare metal but you can see at 2:27, it has gloss to it. i think it was well worth the work.
get a compressor, gun and spray it yourself. if you want to be nostalgic that's how it used to be done. or get a harbor freight traIler and truck the parts down to MAACO!
I would leave the patina, you'll drive it a lot less if you put a nice paint job on it. I had a 66 vette that was a blast to drive, than after it was all restored it just sat in the garage because I was affraid of getting a door ding. Then I ended up selling it because I never drove it. But it's your car and you should just do what YOU like.
I don't understand this "Damn, now I can't drive it" mindset. Hell, you built it, you painted it, you can ALWAYS paint it again!!!! Drive it like it was yours to drive. You don't need permission to enjoy your own car. Thanks, Mike
