Plenty of advice but only you can make the decision. You ask what would be a "market price" for the car and in LA it would be in the $15-18K range. Several coupes have been sold in that price range recently. We seem to have lots of 40 coupes for sale. Done ones bring $35-75K depending on the quality of the car. Most people who score a deal on a 40 coupe turn it right away and move on to something else like a 40 convertible.
Keep it,....You'll never find another 40, in that shape, for as good a price that you got it for !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 4TTRUK
I can't believe you would even consider selling it. It took you 30 years to find a nice enough 40 to actually buy one. That would make you at least 40 years old. Not only that, If you actually only paid 4K for it as you say, then you stole it not bought it. Now to find another deal that would make you happy in condition and price like the one you Own now will be another 30 years at least. That will make you 70 give or take a few years. Add 10 years to build and ask your self what the heck will a 80 year old Dude do with a 40 ford? There is a lot of things that just don't add up to me. If you really want a 40 Ford build what you have now, enjoy yourself and it for the next 30 years. The Wizzard
$14k-$15k arrives very quickly if you must start with major rust work just to make it solid. Pay yourself even $10 an hour for your time and you will be there very fast. I'd say put the money issue aside and decide how much you like this car. If it is what you have been waiting for for all those years--there is your answer. If not---say goodbye
If you want a 40 coupe--keep it--good ones are hard to find and all the little items that are needed can be tough to find and expensive-- a solid complete car is the way to go-I would not sell it if I wanted a 40 coupe-finding another like this will be tough to do.
Obviously, you didn't want a cherry '40 Ford Deluxe coupe as bad as you thought you did. Sell it to someone who will appreciate it...
If you need the money or won't have the money to build it then sell it. I personally would keep it. If you found that nice of a car for that nice of a price it was probably ment to happen! Just go with your gut 10k profit would start 1 hell of a project. But if you wanted to build a 40, you might have to spend 14 just to get close to what you had?
As everyone else has said a rust free 40 is really hard to find especially for that kind of money. But, is that all the money you have? Do you have the time, money & ability to do anything with this car or will it just become a yard ornament like so many others have? We all have dreams of owning that perfect car, house, wife, or whatever then once we get it thats the end of it. The fun was in the chase. I have had a pile of things just like that over the years, and they are just that, a pile of things. If you have the time, money and ability, and will do something with it, then keep it for sure. If not and the money would do something important in your life... well then it's your choice. No matter what, it's a good investment that you will be able to profit from today or ten years from now.
If you are conciderating selling it then you have already moved on let it go. I have had my 40 coupe since 1975 and if it is ever sold it means Im dead.
Sell it. You took 30 years to get it, seems like you never really wanted one to begin with. I'd say the cousin has more of the want for this car. Jason
gotta keep it man, my dad has had his 40 ford coupe for 33 years. you would never be able to replace it for that kind of money....
It seems pretty simple to me...Like the old saying goes."A BIRD IN THE HAND IS WORTH TWO IN A BUSH" _____________________________ LIFE'S A GAMBLE......LET EM' ROLL
One more vote for keeeping it; those cars are badass... there was one in a recent kustom car kulture (?) that I liked... I think it was a Shifters car maybe...
Very simple. If a '40 coupe is the car you have always wanted, keep it. If not, sell it and buy what you really want.
So it took you 30 years to find your dream car and 6 months later your pondering selling it away. If you truly had intentions of finishing this car I don't think you would have posted this thread. Something here seriously doesn't make much sense to me.
Hey toolz...I'm in the same boat. Read my thread. Wanted a 40 coupe for years. Finally got it and started buying parts. Here is my thread on it. Finally..A 40 Ford DeLuxe Coupe!! - THE H.A.M.B. Well afterwards, I bought a REALLY NICE 39 Sedan ...Done...with all the Flathead goodies, right stance...etc. To use while I do the coupe. I had that 39 out today and it just runs it ass off...and looks great doing it. My problem, keep the Sedan...sell the Coupe. I could never build the Coupe to level of this Sedan for the $$ I have in the Sedan....UGH! I still have the Coupe...keep buying parts. Ha..everyone should have this problem. But I'm still up in the air with it. Good Luck with your solution. But I got say for both of us. We don't have that much history with the Coupes....if you sell...another will come along...they are still out there.
I have owned and enjoyed my 40 as long as yours was stored. Never even thought of selling. It has always been a part of my life and my familys with three complete rebuilds done to it. I have this problem and drive the shit out of them. I just finished a frame off rebuild and it is the one in my avatar. If you truly love the 40 style, you will never find another that nice to start on. Keep it and fulfill your dream. Abby
I would say keep it....I bought my first 40 in 1978 and wish i still had it...they are hard to find in that condition....the idea that the family trusted you with the purchase says alot...fix it up drive it for a year or two then make a decision....in the mean time.....have some fun!!!! gump
I had always wanted a Jeep, so about 4 years ago I built one. Since its completion 3 years ago, it's been parked about 250 miles were logged. My cousin offered me cash for it this summer, which I took to help fund my hot rod build. I kick my self for selling it. So if I were you, I wouldn't get rid of it. Especially if you've been after one for 30 years!
If you have to ask then the answer should be no, dont sell it. So you can make money on it, that shouldnt matter because you will always be able to make money on it. Keep it, its your dream car!
If you REALLY want a 40 you better keep that one cause you will be spending at least $15K to buy another one in that condition. Don't feel guilty about buying that one and don't sell it because someone else wants it. $15 K doesn't buy much of a finished hot rod these days. You will regret the day you sell it.
If you are trying to sell it for enough to replace it why don't you just tell the other fella where the other one is? It sounds to me like you have finally captured your dream car and unless you made some kind of a deal to sell it to whoever when you bought it you are under no obligation to sell it to anyone.
