I bought some '39 wide 5 hubs and drums from a HAMBster in Des Moines and needed to get them to my home in Cleveland, TN. Having been in the trucking industry for several years, I didn't want to trust them with any of the LTL carriers like Yellow or any of the small package carriers like UPS or Fedex. I called Bill's Auto Works to see if he would be willing to haul them. He was setting up his last run of 2022 and it wouldn't be in the Des Moines area but he had someone who might be able to help me. He gave me David Phelp's number since he was in Minnesota at the time going to Oklahoma City. I called David and explained the situation. He was just north of Des Moines and wouldn't be able to pick the parts up but, he was coming back through Des Moines in two days and could pick them up then. The only caveat was that it would be a few days before I could get the parts. I called @32fenderless, the seller and explained what needed to be done. He contacted David and arranged the meet. David picked up the parts, delivered the car he had on his trailer to Minnesota and worked his way back to his home in PA. From there, he had a trip going to Florida which brought him within 15 miles of my house. He called me about 10 minutes out of my house, I met him at a truck stop and the parts went home with me. He was so willing to work with both the seller and me and I really appreciate the effort on both their parts. It worked out well for everyone and cost me a lot less than having one of the big companies move them. Good job, David. Thanks
Love it when something like this happens. A small group of great folks getting the job done. In my mind, this is what the HAMB is all about. Big shout out to all involved.....Don.
I hear you on the price for shipping, I think it was about 60-80 $ to send 46-8 hubs and drums to me here in Ca from Oregon or Nevada. Then I bought a set of drums from the Midwest, maybe even further East, seller felt bad about the shipping cost, seems it was about the same 60-80$. Not a ton of money in the grand scheme of things, but it’s the small bites that eat you up. Glad Bill hooked you up!
Another shout out to Dave, who brought my '63 Riviera from Connecticut to Michigan for me a couple weeks ago. It was sooooo much better than dealing with brokers and the ensuing headaches. He's a nice guy, he'll keep you updated regularly, AND he'll communicate with the person he's picking the car/parts up from.
It's called "Fawn Mist." It seems to change depending on the light - sometimes it looks green, sometimes gray, sometimes gold. I like it a lot; you don't see it every day.
Thank you Gentlemen for the kind words! Dave has been an asset to my business as well as to the Hamb. I brought him over after taking notice & reviewing of all the positive comments about his transporting on a FB Car Group we are both on. He has taken care of 35-40 of my overflow customers without a hitch! God Bless Bill https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum...ar-transport-hauling-open-or-enclosed.614419/
Hey Folks, I want to bump this back up to the top only because it shows that it is NOT always about the money! Lets face it...after 40 +years & over 4 million accident-free transporting miles.....I have made my money! It is great to be involved & coordinate cars & sometimes parts between myself & the small handful of guys I trust 100% with my overflow! There are way too many horror stories out there about the bottom feeders in my industry. I would rather help out a fellow HAMB member get his car or parts to him safely vs telling someone to "get it themselves" or "nobody goes there" Even though I am officially shut down for the winter, I may still take a few if it doesn't keep me out too long & I love to help get customers in touch with the guys I trust!!! Thanks to all who have posted for me. I've been on here a long time 20 years to be exact. I have seen and been part of the H.A.M.B. help line. Bill's right, it's not always about the $$$. I don't have time this A.M. to reach out but will in short order. So it's known the Seat is in Northern Michigan and needs to come West to within 20 miles of P.D.X. Oregon. Thanks again to all.
