I did a search but didn't find much. Anyway, let's see pics of rides with suicide front ends where the spring attaches to split bones. I have a couple of ideas for the modified but need some visuals to back me up. Thanks!

Here's some pics from my in progress T-bucket. I stole the idea from the H.A.M.B., the mount goes all the way around the bone.

I'll be doing this too and I'm thinking around the bones like Barn-core's is the way to go. Lots of weld surface and I think the hoop strength will proove to be worth it in the long run if you like to build for "just in case" situations. I have seen other methods that have held up well for years though too.

What motor will you run KIRK? If you're running something big and heavy I'm sure that should help make a decision as to the direction you should go.

Shoot! All you need to do is duct tape the end of the springs to the bones! ;) :p :D

  7. really dig this setup...
    i'm thinking something similar...

How far back on the bones can you mount the spring before you really risk overloading them? I've seen some mounted WAAAY back and it scares the hell out of me.

I used "bolt in" spring perches from Speedway, made for a spring behind hairpin setup. I drilled two holes in the wishbone...one on the outside just big enough for the socket, and one on the inside for the bolt to go through. I figure if it's good enough for a tube axle & batwing setup it should work fine. Still...I think that I'm going to weld a 1/4" plate to the inside of the wishbone. This will serve two purposes, one - to make the area that the bolt goes through almost 1/2" thick and spread out the load while doing so, and two - I'll make another eye, or hole, in it to mount the friction shock to.
Only words of advice I have.... My spring is right inline with where the tierod & draglink would go in a rear steer application. Therefore, I have to run a front steer setup. Just a thought that I didn't think about.

  11. yeah...
the speedway batwings are 3/8" thick
i would reinforce the beans out of that set up.
actually i'd patch that socket hole with a piece of 3/16 or so and find a perch that goes all the way thru the bone.

    Kirk,
on my nephew's Model A coupe we put a hollow boss in the wishbone to bolt the perch to. That way the load is carried by both sides of the tubing . I don't have the capability of reducing the pixel count of the photos on this computer but will try to post photos when I get home tonight. We set the spring back a couple of inches into the tube portion of the wishbone and that puts the axle ahead of the crossmember (Model A c'member in duece rails)

Here's the Rolling Bones set-up. Not really suicide, but still pretty low.
This set-up has a-lot of miles on it, it must work pretty good..

Larry, do you have any more pics that show the relationship of the grille shell to your suspension?

    "Crush-Tube" welded through the bone
    "fish-Plates" welded to each side
Perches welded through the whole mess...

That's the one sticky point in my head. I have done this type of front end before but had to go with the tie-rod-in-front setup. I also don't want much increase in the wheelbase.

I agree, keep the tie rod behind the axle.
The "RB" front end is the same deal Doane Spencer did way back when.
If you use a orig non drop axle, and bolt on (dropped axle)steering arms to put the tie rod under the wishbone, that problem solved.
Think "race car" when making the perch mounts.

I have some cool pictures of a car I(we) built.......

Here's my setup. Kind of another variation on the theme. Stock perch pins upside down thru a sleeve welded to the bone ecapsulated by the top and bottom plates and a small gusset plate in the middle. The truck isn't on the road yet, so it's untested so far, but it can't be any worse than having the perch bolt welded directly to the bone itself. Still needs a little tie rod maneuvering, via the aforementioned dropped steering arms.

I was thinking suicide style was with the tie rod stuck out front vulnerable to being bent by any road debris.

So is anyone running a suicide perch out front with the tie rod out front, but running a kind of bumper to protect the tie rod? I'd like to see a picture of that. I have some ideas for it.
