Last year some guy backed into my 33 grill, bending it out of wack pretty good. Fortunatly, I was able to straighten it back out. I love the look of just frame horns, but I don't want my grill to get tweaked again by some clown. Anyhow, I've been debating between fabricating a front spreader bar vs. the following bumper guard concept I fabricated last week. I got the idea of taking some 1936 Ford deluxe bumper guards and bolting them to my front frame horns with some custom made spacers and brackets. What do you think about this look? Should I go with the traditional front spreader bar on my A frame horns? The thing I don't like about front spreader bars is that they can sometimes take away from the beauty of a grill...like in my case. Anyhow, show me some creative pictures of what you got. Dowie
Personally I like the spreader bar to follow the lines of the shell/grill. I like you nerfs, but I think they take away for the overall look of the radiator..............at least from the side view you have posted.............show a straight on view....................besides, it's your ride and you are the one that has to drive it and look at everyday...................it's what you like, not someone else............IMHO
Dowies; I used a Model A brake cross shaft as a spreader bar;matches the '32 shell quite nicely.I'd imagine it would work for a '33-'34 grill too.
Thanks for the images and ideas. I like the idea of using a model A brake cross shaft as a front spreader bar. The downward curve looks great, and it flows with the grill. My body and grill is channeled over my A frame by 4.00". Attached is a front view of my 1936 bumper guards grafted in place on the front A frame horns. Dowie
Dowie, From the front the nerf bars look really good..............what would they look like on the outside of the frame rather than the inside. I also like 29SX276's brake cross shaft.................I cut mine out and tossed it..............should have saved it, great imagination, wish I had thought of that! Mine was just simple to make, two pieces of stainless........weld........polish
that cam thing has been done lots of times so dont make his head swell.. I wouldnt count on it for anything but looks though. Ever drop a cam on a cement floor.. Its actually kinda fun watching howmany pieces it breaks into.. Dave
cut some chrome tubing and add a 57 chev rear trim V spear.. this is on a woodie roadster pickup... wood
I was going to go with the old camshaft from my flathead, but then I thought of barking my shin on it in a dark garage. Flatman
Spreader, transmission oil cooler, license plate holder. 2" OD, 120 sq inches of radiation area. Works well. Another one, this time 1 3/4" OD for the 31 on 32 rails project. A little less radiation area, but I'll probably make a finned aluminum piece to add under the car. The smaller OD chosen to add a little visual lightness to the car as compared to the 32. The 32 has a Derale trans oil pan and the 31 will get one. You can't see it on the 32, but theres a 1/8" pipe plug center bottom of the tube. Figured I needed a drain, but have never used it.
Shoot me if ya want but I'm kinda proud of the original Henry Ford version that some old hod rodder had chromed back in the day. Not very original but it hits a soft spot in my heart.
Sorry that's one item that I don't collect. I bought it here a few years ago in a fund raiser auction for the Hamb. It's one of 5 if I remember right. Whizzerick made them... never to be duplicated again. I display it proudly. Eat your heart out.
Thanks Dave, your right, 100% show only. And your right, I had seen it somewhere in a mag before, by far from original. I like it because it is different. "29SX276", shocks work well, off of a late '50's/early 60's Austin Healy, British stuff.
Rick, I'll distract him, looks to take a pair of 7/16" wrenches. "Hey Tommy, let me show you by new crossmember".
Sorry. I'm no good at posting a picture but this link will show you my spreader bar made from 1/2" cold roll round and chromed which protects my grille and surround from speed bumps, etc. (it works !) http://www.hotrodhotline.com/featur...s_2011_mike_eckert/html/ggcolumbusmike_44.php
