Just getting my brain wrapped around these trucks. Question. Can the Jet hoods fit on later model years? Say a 60-61 fit a 64? I guess the extended question is, can the hoods interchange through the run of production?

All the hoods will interchange 60-66 Chevy and GMC.
Sometimes the hood latch has to be changed from an earlier hood to a later version.

as far as other difference in years 64 brought self adjusting brakes and some heater upgrades. 63 of course was the new designed inline six. 65 was seat belts. these are my favorite truck i have a 63 and 64.

What year(s) if any are the ones to stay away from because of hard-to-find parts or slim reproduction availability?

I think 64-6 have more available than the earlier ones,
I personally want a 63, it has the later frame-easier to work with- and the wrap around windshield still, which I like better.

the front sheet metal/hood/grilles are interchangeable all chev/gmc 60-66, so you can choose the combo that you like best and go with it.

60-62 had the x frame with torsion bar front suspension, in 63 they changed the frame and used it until 66.
60-63 had the wrap around windshield, and double hump dash, the windshield is about 3x more $$ than the flat 64-6 windshield.
the boxes are all the same through the years, however the 60-62 's have different mounting pionts due to the wider x frame, they can be made to work with minimal modification.

60-62 's bumpers are different, the holes are closer together than the ones on a 63-66.

    hey jonzccustomshop,
thanks for the info, those are really helpful shoppers-guide points to have handy when looking for the right truck. Thanks!
Did they all come with 3 on the tree and an inline 6 as standard? What kind of drive train do you want to look for/avoid?

The parts are hit and miss. You can get pretty much all of the frame/suspension components you want. As far as sheet metal you are limited. There are no reproduction hoods or fleetside bedsides and both are bad for rust. Alot of the reproduction parts just are not as good as the original but, thats really the case with most things.

They came with a 6cyl. and 3spd standard in 1/2 Ton or C-10 trucks. You could get a 283 with a 2spd powerglide as an option and in 66 you could get a 327.

The big difference between the GMC and Chevrolet is the rear suspension setups are different. The GMC has leaf springs and the Chevrolet has a trailing arm and coils setup.
Also, the hoods on a 62-66 are different on a GMC and a Chevrolet as most people will argue that they are not. The difference is the signal lights and the front area of the hood.

If you are looking for more information on these trucks check out the 60-66 chevy truck forum. There are lots of lists of vendors, how to info, and just other people who own these truck that know alot about these trucks. Heres the link.

The powerglide opton is more rare, but the most common tranny I see is the granny gear 4 speed with either the v6(gmc) the straight 6, or the 283 v8, the 3 on the tree trucks are out there, but I think the 4spd trucks have them beat.

Yeah Ive seen seen some 4spd trucks but there were mainly 3/4 ton but there are some 1/2 tons.

My 65 came factory with the 283, powerglide, and power steering options : )

I have had several GMC's and only 1 long box had leaf springs on the rear,I still have a 64 Shortbox fleetside and its got coils, was a factory 283 4spd Custom Cab.
Some of the heavy duty 3/4 tons had the coils and a leaf spring type of overload spring.

here's a shot of mine. I love it. keeping it basic. straight six, headers and a couple of glass packs. Cut coils and a c notch just installed. Just picked up 62 GMC grill to form the basis of a kustom grill bumper set up..

I think the GMC came standard with leafs and the Chevy with coils but you could order them either way.

I think you are right, rusty48.
    64krusty's gmc came with a 283....
that might be a canadian thing.
as far as I know american gmc's were V6 only until 66, when the straight 6 was an option.
check out this website for a ton of info on the gmc.

I grew up around these trucks and have only seen one v6 truck ever, I think the Canadian trucks (GMCs) had the same engines and suspensions as the Chevrolets.
I wonder if anything else is different on a Canadian GMC? My Dad worked for the highways dept in the 60's and they mostly used GMCs, his were all inline 6 cylinders, except one had a 283 and it was a plane jane shortbox stepside 3 speed on the column.
