I'm running a 70's style Model A that Id like to take back more traditional. Im running 68 327 tunnel ram in the A coupe and Id like to age the engine as well as the engine compartment. Id prefer to run what I have but aging it a patina treatment. Looking for Ideas. :D

If you have a picture it would help critique.

Fake patina usually looks fake to me.

    Here's some real patina.

  3. I've never really thought of an engine bay having "Patina"-usually they're just dirty old motors.

Personally I prefer clean and shiny under the hood. Not full blown detailed but nicely maintained.

Guess maybe patina isnt the right word I should be using... Im thinking more af a retro look... Maybe a black engine and intake with maybe some subtle striping on the tunnel ram. Maybe build my own aircleaner with some big *** rivits in it. Possibly build some ole looking valve covers or something so it doesnt look so new? Not sure I can even explane it?

+1 and they look like **** in the process. I started rodding in the 70's and even if the car wasn't finished or all that spiffy every guy I knew who had a rod had the engine compartment squared away and spiffed up. The only exceptions were cars that hadn't had engine swaps for the most part. Most guys then took a lot of pride in the engine compartments (whole cars actually) and didn't open the hood unless it was fully presentable under there. A lot of my friends never took a car to a show until it was fully finished either. I wasn't in that category though as my truck has never been finished.

A 70's theme would be a nice looking engine compartment with all the goodies (carb, intake, valve covers and what not) that were available in that time period. Not a ****py looking engine compartment.

Get rid of the billet pulleys. Paint the block Chevy orange and strip the paint off the intake and air cleaners. Then, paint the firewall white or satin black.

I know most of the cars I owned that were slightly rodded had some chrome and paint in the engine bay before the rest of the car. Although I like sleepers so factory paint, lettering and just simple engine bays are what works for me.

After reading your second post, I'll agree with you and say patina is not the word you are looking for.

  17. I used to have a fair pic of the bay in the Pusher but I don't recall where to look. Here is the one in my parts hauler/bad weather vehicle. It is pretty warn and needs a good cleaning but it no dount would count as either patina or rough.

What your car really needs os a good freshening maybe the checks would be OK or just a good spritzing with a rattle can in a different color like say black?

Ya know deep down I think your right. Just need to know what I want before I start over again. Im thinking the "Patina" Look is just too hard with something like this. More retro or early 60 is what Im am going to be shooting for. I really appreciate the honest replys. Hummm now what?

Nothing wrong with turquoise , but I would **** can the tunnel ram ,& put ribbed aluminum on everything ! Subtle stiping would make the tunnel ramm look even GAYER !

When I see you picture it looks "street rod" to me.

If you are shooting for early 60's, I would change the paint to anything else ;), go with a different intake and valve covers and change the pulley. I don't know when tunnel rams cam out but they seem 70's to me. Valve covers, either painted or aluminum finned. Water pump pulley, find a steel one.

Left side firewall covered in grit, appears to never have been cleaned. Right side after some Simple Green and a blue shop towel. I am a bit weary of hitting the p*** side with Simple Green, because it would wash off the ***embly line lettering. Painted the engine after re-installing the head. The "patina" is there some new, mostly old. Those new cloth wrapped plug wires were real pretty, until I had to remove them. Now they are covered in my grease from my fingers.

paint the engine gold and put a more traditional intake on it, lose the billet and put some finned alum valve covers on it....

paint everything with the cheapest spray cans you can find, never wash it, leave your valve covers out in the rain for a month, ditch those fancy air cleaners and call it a day.

I'm tellin ya man, between my work schedule and the wife's I haven't had time to do anything. Now that the car is mobile I've been driving it more than working on it.

After looking at that pic I posted on this thread I have decided that there is absolutely NO reason for that engine bay to look like it does. I plan to finish cleaning the rest of the firewall this week, and shoot the inner fenders with some flat black. Gotta get **** goin for Nats, less than a month away you know.
