I dunno why it would have to be "T" shaped. A single dead-end tube off of each main branch (assuming there isn't a crossover tube connecting them) would give the same effect. It all seems a bit Rube Goldberg honestly. Why go to all that trouble, just to keep from having to run a baffle? Especially with the long system (as opposed to open/baffled headers), I don't see the advantage.
Power = Noise Everyone's got a different level of acceptable noise, and trying to muffle a 300hp 283 with baffles is a whole different deal than trying to quiet a 450hp 427. The more extreme your engine, the more extreme the solutions to manage the beast
Just chippin in my 2 cents.... I use heavy st. steel wool to pack motorcycle baffles. Don't know if it would work on bigger engines, but it lasts a lot longer than the fiberglass I used. You have to use 0, 00 or heavier and stainless though, or it will ignight or rot quickly. Luke
Have you ever run a "water hammer arrestor" type tube to quiet down a big block? Is it really that effective? 'Cause just from looking at it, I would think the "hammer arrestor" thing would not be as effective as just a plain baffle like the OP built, or a regular muffler (like the dreaded Turbo Flow or something similar). Is it cumulative? I suppose it would be, just don't know how much effect the "hammer arrestors" have. I'm probably spoiled. Around here, I'm certain a fellow could get away with open headers and no baffles at all, if you kept it to daylight hours and early evening. Later would be a problem. I used to get the cops called on me when we'd tune the racecar late at night, but that's to be expected of open headers at 11pm. Funny thing is, there isn't a noise ordinance in town, so the cop asked us nicely to finish as quickly as we could so they'd stop calling. lol
I have a Y-block with dual straight pipes. It really makes music on deceleration! I also have straight pipes on a SBC, both cars exhausting to the rear bumper. But they have a bark on acceleration that was just a small amount offensive. I cut tubing about 7 inches long, that just fits in the tailpipe and cut V's in the short pieces, bending the V into the flow. They look like the baffles we put in choppers in the seventies. They still sound good, but muted one time. Use a screw to hold them in or crimp the tailpipe slightly
Ooooooo....never thought of that! Heavy and cheap, might have to try that. Now that I'm done hijacking, I forgot to add those are some great looking pipes Glen! Luke
Very nice work there.....check out my hillbilly baffles ! ! used a fram oil filter cut the end off, shoved it up there. cut the open header noise back only 20 percent but cops see it as a baffle. the tuning was un affected, used fram because casing is heavy duty.
Haney, does the engine run OK under throttle with that much restriction in the pipe? Cheap solution for sure, but man, those holes don't add up to much area. Good luck and keep us posted
