IMG_1852.jpeg IMG_1855.jpeg IMG_1851.jpeg IMG_1853.jpeg IMG_1854.jpeg IMG_1850.jpeg I need a trigger switch for my Sioux seat grinder. Don’t let appearances fool you. It runs smooth as silk. The switch went out and I’ve been looking all over. Internet/online/etc. I wired up direct just to check and make sure. This version has the all metal handles that split and one side unbolts.
The new versions say they will only work on plastic handle machines. I need to find a switch that will bolt in and no be a cobble job.

  3. Yeah, that's an oldie...

I'm reasonably sure you're going to be SOL in finding a new switch. Best bet would to be find an old, long-time-around tool repair place and pray they have one on the shelf. These switches are almost always proprietary, not generic. Or maybe do some research to see if they (or the parent company) also made a larger drill motor that might have shared this switch. But don't get your hopes up...

It may be repairable. From what I can see, it looks like the mechanical part still works, you just have burned contacts. Those contacts are in the bakelight housing, if you can disassemble that without breaking it, I suspect what you'll find is there's two sets of contacts. By turning them over, you can use the 'new' set. Even if there's not unused contacts, you may be able to clean/file them and get more use out of it.

If all that fails, you could wire a foot switch into the cord and eliminate the handle switch. Good luck!

    Steve ,
You are correct. The problem was that the tiny bolts(2) that hold the switch together broke off. If I can drill the tiny screws out there is a chance. I am honestly hoping there is a switch somewhere. I have a few spots to look.
Steve I had thought about using a foot switch if it came to it but again I am hopeful.
Thanks for any and all help. And yes I’d take a used switch also.

Sorry I can’t add any sources, but I will be watching and hoping you get some good suggestions. I have a pair of old drills that have been in my family since new. My grandfather was an engineer at Sioux Tools when your grinder was probably made.

If it's too old maybe no help, but I would check with Beam Equipment Supply.

  7. Look on the bright side; if the switch was newer, it would be a glued-together sealed plastic unit that's totally non-repairable. You have a real shot at fixing this one.

I've got 3 or 4 newer name-brand power tools with bad sealed switches that haven't been repaired because the switches cost almost as much as a new replacement tool (more if replaced with the better HF units). To add insult to injury, the service replacements don't last as long. Planned obsolescence....

Just ordered it. KB if your ever in my part of the woods I’ll buy dinner or lunch. I called myself looking. It looks close enough that for that price I’ll take a chance. A new one as in Soiux/style seat grinder is around 1300$. Supposed to be here Saturday.
Thanks to everyone that knew things I didn't and knew where look.

On Cold War Motors, Scott has been doing a valve grind on a nailhead using some old valve grinder tool but he just spun it with a cordless drill.

  16. I've got that same Sioux seat grinder; it doesn't get a lot of use, but their not much good if they don't work. :) I'm glad you were able to get the switch you needed.

KB is there anything on a 4dr 40 mode ford that will work or fit? There is one in a town near me that recently was struck by tornado. Amory Ms. As it happens it is sitting right next to the road with a stack of early T birds.Don’t know what the deal is but I could stop and ask. I don’t think they are real interested in fixing. House is gone and it’s been sitting there a while. Looks to be largely complete. I can try to track down info if it’s of any interest to you.

All back together. Like new. Now I need to order another seat of stones soni will have enough to have a set for each of the angles that I use and not have to dress so much of the stone away changing angles.
