How about rebuilding and souping the stock six if it's there? These are neat engines, replacement parts are cheap and available as are some cool speed goodies. I'm building one right now to go in a Model A rod.

  4. I remember seeing a slant six in a '50 Mopar awhile back. The owner was talking about how he loved opening the hood for people and then saying, "Oh no! My motor fell over!" The slant is longer than the stock motor or a V8 and the firewall will have to be cut some. It would be definitely be cool and different. Those slants can be built up pretty good, too.

  5. Had a 51, I rebuilt the engine, it ran fine. I was going to change the engine, you can pic-up a good used doner car cheep, Dodge or Chrysler with a 318 and a 727, use all the drivetrain, with the rear too. Had checked it all out, not a bad job to do yourself with a little help from your friends. Just a thought, think the slant 6, a good engine, is a little long for the engine compartment.

  6. MY 48 had a slant 6 in it when I got it, ran pretty good except the thing was wore out. they cut the right fender side panel for alt. clearance other than that it was an easy install for them.don't have any pics of it sorry.

  7. If you want a slant six go for it. The fender well on the pass side is a three peace unit and easy to cut and work with. The down side is working on the motor in the car ! If I had it all to do again I would have kept the flathead six. There are so many parts venders out there now. My friends will run 75 80 MPH with the air on, Useing a stock overdrive. he has a set of slant six carbs 1BBLS and a split set of pipes its sounds like a zipper on roiads. if you do this buy a new dist and drop in and mount the box inside the car, YOU DONT WANT POINTS IN THIS CAR !

This is as far as my 50 Dodge project got before it stalled out. The slant six takes up a lot of space. I think if I ever get back on this project I'm going to put a 318 in it, unless I run across a cheap 383/440. [IMG]

There is a 46 or 7 on ebay currently with a /6 in it. Remember the stock motor was 23 inches long and the /6 is nearly 27 so I believe you need to either mess with the firewall or change and move the radiator, an likely do some work on the front cross member. You might also get a Jeep 4 liter in there but with the same considerations.

We tried to put a slant 6 in a 47 International pickup. The problem is the slant puts the head right into the heater on most cars. The firewall is usually indented in the center of the car and the slant needs the room way to the passenger side. Most cars need the firewall cut and the heater relocated to use a slant 6. Way too much work for what you end up with.

Have seen this done two or 3 times. One 38 Plym one 49 Plym one 55 Dodge truck. In all 3 cases they recessed the firewall about 6 inches. I couldn't believe the slant is that much longer but it is.

Before I did that I would use a V6. It would have its own problems but easier to deal with.

Boring day there in NY 51Cambridge to dig out a 6 year dead thread for your 6th post.

While those old slant six engines are dead nuts reliable they were always a royal pain in the ass for me to work on in the cars that they came in in the 60's and 70's because everything you needed to get to was down on the passenger side under that slant engine. If a guy doesn't mind working in awkward positions or removing the tire and inner fender panel to work on the ignition head on go for it.

The distributor comes out if you remove 1 bolt then work on it on the bench. You don't even lose the timing adjustment.

  17. The old Dodge slant 6's were almost indestructible and run great,I had one in a truck and I put it through it paces and it never let me down. HRP
