So, my 55 Ford came with Tbird wires and I am not a big fan, not to mention they are a pita to put air in the tires. I love the 1956-57 Lincoln hubcaps, but don't have the $$ for the high dollar caps right now. What would have been a good clean look for a car in this era. I'm not big on flippers etc. Just a nice flat, cool looking hubcap. I kinda like the 1950-56 Olds caps. Would that be gay? Go easy on a custom newbie.
I kind of like these. They are overlooked Chrysler caps. Just different than what you see most often. The Wizzard
You used to see Moon discs on customs, but that look seems to be out of favor these days. Either 'as turned' for a bit of 'hot rod' flavor, or polished for the 'full custom' look.
I remember 57 Plymouth caps being used a lot back in the day http://www.hubcaps.org/hubcaps/plymouth/plymouth-classic-hubcaps-ply57b.jpg
If you are going to go 15 inch you have lots of period correct choices. The Olds caps you kinda like, 55 and 56 Plymouth,55 Pontiac with a bullet in the center, 56 Pontiac, not to mention all the aftermarket stuff available.
The problem with snapping on a set of caps, is that the real tbird caps have like 4 straps that clip under the bead where the tire meets the wheel. The hubcap actually pulls out on these straps about 3 inches. I need to figure out how to get them off.
I have a friend that just finished one of these Birds with wires. I'll be seeing him Tuesday. I'll ask him how that works. I know what your talking about but have never messed with them.
Those '57 Plymouth wheel covers were the tits back then. There were several aftermarket copies, but the real ones were the ones you really wanted.
Some of the aftermarket ones didn't have the checks around the rim....but I liked the checks. The aftermarket ones may be available in 15"
Yep, the 56-57 lincolns do look good! but those 51 chryslers may look good too with the whole cap buffed to a full shine
Early 50's Desoto is one of my favorite. I would put a bullet in the center. Sent from my iPhone using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
You can use the '57 Plymouth caps, just pop rivet them to a set of 15' trim rings and pop them on.....
If you go with a Moon disk, or a snap-on DelMet cap you can always modify it. Either add a simple bullet to the center or even paint a design on it as was popular in the fifties. By coincidence, I recently photochopped a custom Willys Aero Lark with painted caps. And I used the '57 Lincoln cap star for inspiration!
This is what was on one of the 50 Pontiacs I bought a couple weeks ago. I think folks refer to them as "Sombreros".
There was an aftermarket "cone" wheelcover that was very similar to the Plymouth cone, but it didn't have the hash marks around the outer edge, and it was available in 15", Night Prowlers has repops. Very clean looking wheelcover, check them out, they might be just what you are looking for.
