I still see these at pick-n-pull quite often. The last time I was there, there was a 70s chevy 3/4 ton (8 lug) with a set of 16.5" slots. About 2 months prior I saw a van in there with the same wheels, 16.5" 8 lug. My brother-in-law got a set from pick-n-pull for about $50, and with a few hours sanding and polishing they look great. He put them on his boat trailer, 1965 Criscraft SS
Doc, are you sure the 15 x 10's need a special unilug washer? I bought a brand new pair of Americans in 1985 and they had the oval slot that took a regular mag lugnut. Bought a couple more 10's in 1990 and they were the same way far as lug holes went. I've seen a couple more pairs of 10's and they had the slotted lug hole. As well as having owned or helped with slot mags that did take the specialized washer. The Long Beach swap usually had a vendor on site that sold the unilug adapters. We got some for my pal's 8" slot mags, no problems. Other places to check are older tire stores. One that was close to me when I lived in Central California had several boxes full of new unilug adapters. We lucked out not long after moving to Sunny Arizona, a junkyard that the IRS closed down in 1993 was purchased, sorta re-opened for a while and the new owner was selling out stuff cheap. We bought all the slot mags we thought we could use for future projects and to change sizes on the present cars for ten bucks apiece. No 10" or 4" though.
same here- been on my '73 Chevy since new! Cl***ic wheel and I wish I had a 15x4 and 15x8 set for a g***er project. If you look close in the old Hot Rods and race coverage, you can see the tiny "bean" slots as far back as 61 or 62 and the slots enlarged by 65/66
when i put the ansen's on my vette the price was already getting up there. last swap meet they have gotten to be really expensive.
A buddy of mine has a pair that're 15x15,,& I believe they are SIX lug. He might want to sell them too. Want me to find out,& maybe get a pic & lug/back spacing?
Nice thing about slots other than they are '60s wheels and I'm a '60s kid. is that most of the time there is room to redrill them for a different bolt pattern. I got a set (haven't seen 'em yet but they are on there way) that are dual pattern, GM (5x4.75) and Ford (5x4.25).
The ones on the back of the Stude are duel bolt pattern, big Olds and now Ford too. I also have a set of cover plates to hide the duel pattern.
True the majority of the time. I've seen a few - and might own a couple - that have webs in the back with hollows so the re-drilling to another pattern is out for those. But like Porkn****** says, most times you can do it....
Just bought a set of 15X14 Ansens. I gave 150.00 for them.(with one NOS M50 15 bias tire, It's now on a 15X10 five spoke doing duty as my coffee table) I also have 15X10s, 15X8.5s and a full set of 14X6 3/4 that I bought NOS in the boxes. The boxes were stamped 1972. Sorry, none are for sale.
So, 8 years ago slots were hot! I've been planning on American TTs but haven't found any with enough negative offset to fit my front fenders. But I did find a pair of cheap slots. So what's the story now? Always been a bit ho-hum but it looks like I may have to learn to like 'em. So lets see more nice slots. Love the page one photos.
I've got a pair of Fenton Gyros for the back of my Henry J someday, I think they're marked 15X11. [/IMG] Blue
I've always loved slots! Super skinny, and super wide! Seems everybody else does too, as finding the skinnies and wides is spendy! I've got them on my Austin g***er, and tried finding the same for my Falcon g***er, but it was even tougher to find what I wanted in 5x4.5 BP wheels. Ended up with 5 spokes instead.
I really like the satin look of these (from page 1), and the caps. Since mine are old swap meet cheapies they need a lot of cleanup and this would save polishing. Whaddya thing, 220 grit paper, steel wool?
I have a wide set on the rear of my Grand Prix(too new for HAMB) they've been p***ed down through my family since the early seventies and no matter what I did they would not polish up. My old man said they were mags and couldn't polish like the fronts I had.
Blowby, I have used the maroon(fine) scotchbrite for the satin look. I just wash them with a scotchbrite pad anytime I'm washing the vehicle and it keeps them looking fresh. Sam
Thanks, that occurred to me too after I posted. Hate to admit but in my misspent youth I used to polish my wheels with the rear end jacked up, idling in gear. Never broke any fingers but inhaled a lot of exhaust.
I've done that method but used WD-40 as a lubricator and turns the aluminum a little darker like magnesium.
As a kid in the late 60's early 70's, slot, deep dish mags were the ****! Then, Cragar SS 5 spokes started showing up. This is an old thread, but where I live, slots have not come back yet. All the more reason to run them.
Slots rule. This weekend I cam across a set on a 69 Nova in a junkyard in Chula Vista. I was tempted, but they were 14" and a strange no-name brand.
The nice thing about slots is you can park overnight in the ghetto and they won't get stolen. They may take your car, but the slots will still be sitting there.
Are slots really that cool? I have a set of 2 14x6 and 2 15x7 in my garage, I have been contemplating putting them on my 40....They are the unilug? they have oval lug holes.
Personally Im not a fan of the unilug. I had unilugs on the front of my car and they were overtorqued collapsing the washer and I had one p*** me driving home one night.
The washers is what I worried about, and then there is lug bottom out....This is why they are in my garage and not on my car...
