I'm helpimg a friend install a SBC (NO it's not a flathers) in a model A and there isn't any room it install a altinator in the lower position as some after market brackets suggest. I need a VERY small diameter one, or another isea. Mounting it on top doesn't give the water pump much belt engaugement. Shoulda put a flatmotor in it.
My eye sight is about gone. when you get my age you do the best you cam with what I got. Sorry I'm not perfect any more like some others, Ol' Ron
Summit and Jegs have huge lineups of expensive small alts, but don't give dimensions... I think a tour of the furrin car section at the junkyard is in order. I understand some tiny ones also are out there on the little off road vehicles--someone here will know particulars. There's even an invisible alternator option if amp needs can be kept low...someone makes a racing Chevy one that lives under the waterpump pulley!
Ron, Look at a Pontiac Sunbird '92 or '93. That's what I have on my Blown Flatmotor. I think that's about as small as they come. We could care less about your spelling Ron; keep your informative posts coming. Also Ron check your e-mail I sent you one.
...this coming from the guy who can't spell the... Anyways.... try this link: http://www.powermastermotorsports.com/denso_alternators.html the Denso style are about 5 1/4" in diameter for the body and around 6" for the mounting ears.
yeah i spell like shit too, LOL i was jus jokin around honda ones are TINY, the nippon denso ones from i think 88-95 are the better ones... i may even have one sittin around, although not sure..
Lots of 80's imports had small inexpensive alternators, look for an old Honda or Toyota, I think a lot of them were internal regulated with simple wiring too.
go to the junkyard with a tape measure & start digging!! just make sure you get one with a internal regulator. JimV
Or: If you don't a lot of city driving or have a high-amp audio system you can always hook it up to the driveshaft. ;^D ~ Paul aka "Tha Driver" Remember 1/2 of the population is below average.
Pinto alternators are fairly small. Prices are reasonable as well. I bought this one - an American rebuild - for $37. a couple years back. Takes a regulator, but that's no big deal, they're about $12. - $15. Second pic shows the same alternator with a two bolt mount.
there are companies who sell kits for 80's/90's import alts (like toyota,honda...) or you can make a bracket to put it by the valve cover.
Somebody makes an alternator that's built into the water pump for SBC's. My friend was showing it to me a few weeks ago in a magazine inthe new parts section. Unfortuneatly that's all I know about it.
That's the one I mentioned--I think I must have seen it in a Summit or Jeg's catalog. Low amps, but enough for a simple rod, and it doesn't take up any space at all for any practical purposes.
Thanks guys I haven't been able to spell fpr 70+ years, got nutin to do whit da eyes. I went to a very larg Junk yard and looked at hunderds of altinators and none of them will work. Now let me refraze the question. I have a 31 model A with a 4.3 chebby in it ( not me Bruce) and the owner wants to be able to close the hood. Now there must be hundreds of them running around or am I the first one to have this problem.
Lucas alternators as fitted to MGs and Minis are tiny and contrary to popular belief last real well, internal reg and very, cheap even over there!
Chevy Cavaliers have smaller diameter Alts and some years are clocked the same as their big brothers.
Nipon Denso makes about as small an alt. as you're going to find. Probably find one off a HONDA or the like.
