Whats the concensus on the best small block chev engine and TH350 transmission mounts. Anyone have a brand/part # they commonly use and trust? Thanks!
OEM in a GM box but you can't get them any more. So you're left with what's available for stock replacement at the parts store or online, or get some of those modern hard urethane ones that don't look right in an old car.
Just last week I bought a trans mount from Advance Auto. Its an Anchor part # 2378, haven't installed it yet but it looks good. Made in Korea.
Specify black, by the way, they have two different height trans mounts. https://www.energysuspensionparts.com/
I've bought the Energy Suspension Parts urethane in Black often. They're well made and being black look just fine on old cars.
I tried years ago urethane mounts, I think by Energy Suspension. Might be wrong. But dang it felt like cars I’d been in with solid mounts. Are the black ones more forgiving? I recall mine were orange or red.
As far as I know they shared the same durometer, all I've ever used were the black ones. You may have just gotten used to the soggy rubber oem style mounts.
I’m with squirrel on the OEM mounts but being there unavailable it’s the energy suspension urethane or equivalent for me. The aftermarket replacement stuff from the auto parts stores are terrible as with most of the stuff on the market these days. The urethane is also stronger if your making any real power and don’t want solid mounts.
Well I guess it depends on the person using them really. I often use solid steel motor mounts on my hotrods too, and never found them objectionable either. A lot of people don't want to feel any engine vibration, so if that's the case you probably want rubber mounts.
Since OEM mounts aren’t available I’ve been using the simple looking early side mounts from the auto parts store and adding a “safety bolt” to them in case they de-bond. I haven’t had any fail though.
I'm with you there - I suppose I should have specifically mentioned in my post that I seek rubber and not urethane for this same reason.
If you really want a good laugh, go to summitracing.com and look up anchor industries 2249... Watch the video - it's priceless
I'm using these engine mounts in a 1955 Ford F100 with a fat man fabrication front end kit - the engine mounting points leave you with a little tube to slide the cross bolt through. The transmission is a standard TH350 with a 9" tail shaft. I just want something that's going to be good quality, reliable and vibration reducing
btw you can still get good ones, they're NOS and old now, but should easily outlast most of the current aftermarket mounts. They're not cheap, the restorers have seen to that.
I just ordered Anchor 2378 and 2142 from Summit - they both have great reviews and were only $5-6 Will let you all know how they look and install when I get them. Thanks for the advice!
All right, I got the Anchor brand 2142 engine mounts and they are Shiiii-teee. The cross bolt doesn't even fit through the holes in the ears. I've been to a few auto parts stores in town but without having a vehicle specific application the young ones behind the counters just look at me like I have horns. Anyone have any other suggestions?
I just received a set of BEAUTIUL mounts...bolts fit and they appear to be high quality - look good too! These will be my standard go-to for SBC mounts from here out (the trans mount looks good too) Trans-Dapt Performance Products 9525
