I am searching high and low for a set of steel shim gaskets for a 283. Now before everyone tells me that Summit, Jegs, Autozone or O'Reillys sells em, let me say I want one with the correct bore.

Not the 4.100" I need to keep the compression up. It's a 283 that is .060 over.

I have some old GM part numbers that are supposed to be the original numbers, 14085906 and the older number 362690. The 305's had a gasket number of 10105115 but I can't verify the bore or the compressed thickness.

If anyone has any advice or a supplier I would be much obliged.

Thanks D. Yeah, that's where I got the info I have now. I just want to verify the bore on that p/n before I drop 75 bucks on head gaskets.

I odrered the 10105115. It was used on 305's up til the early 90's. It's supposed to be .026" before crush. We'll see when they get here. I hope I can use em.

Yep, pretty sure they were used on the 262" Monza V8. The super stock guys use them to get every bit of compression they can on the 'small' motors. That's why they cost so much...........

I went through a search like this a few years for a buddy who was building a 305-powered NHRA-legal stocker and needed a 'small-bore specific' head gaskets in order to legally maximize his compression. I ended up finding him 4 or 5 NOS sets for a 3.875 inch (283 and 307) bore size engine at an older OMC Marine parts dealer. I don't remember the part number, but the small-bore specific gaskets were for an early '70's 225 hp OMC (nee 307 Chevy) marine engine. The gaskets were supposedly 'obsolete' - ie - no longer produced, - but still in stock at this particular marina. By the way, a lot of older marinas and marine parts dealers often tend to be quite 'pack-rattish' and often have a lot of old and otherwise obsolete parts in stock. Definitely, try checking some older and long established marinias and/or OMC parts dealers for the small bore Chevy gaskets you want.

Speaking of old marine dealers and oddball NOS "marine" parts, another time, I got a set of NOS gaskets and valves for use in a buddy's 6 cylinder '38 Plymouth at a place called PAL engines (now Parry Automotive - www.parryautomotive.com/history.phpin ) in Orillia Ontario. The gaskets and valves were still in their original 1930's Mopar packaging and in the stock room, they had other NOS engine parts for various makes going back to the early 1900s!

4.1 bore but they compress to .016 http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/d...t&model=Bel+Air&vi=1323414&pt=02289&ppt=C0026

A Google search for Fel Pro 7733SH1 brings this up.

You might do some research on Felpro 8510SP as they are supposed to be a steel shim gasket and they don't show for larger than a 305 as far as bore goes. I can't find the thickness of it online though so that will call for a catalog search.

i think the 8510's are part of their head saver line and are designed to be used between the block and head gasket , to compensate for machining work that has been done to the block.

The GM 10105115 head gasket has a 3.875" bore, a .060" over 283 is 3.935" putting the "fire ring" of the head gasket inside the bores, it will burn through the head gaskets fairly quick. The GM part #10105117 head gaskets are your best bet

Building a .060 over 283 as well! I can’t find those 3.950 in bore head gaskets on SCE Gaskets or anywhere. Best I can find is 10105117 with 4.00 in bore with .028 in compressed thickness. Anything better than that in bore size and/or compressed thickness would be great! Thanks!

Olson gaskets in Washington state, also runs an ad in Hemmings. Might be too new for him, but worth a try.

Saw this thread today. Been sidetracked looking for 283 head gaskets all afternoon, as I just picked up a 283. Best I found is a marine supplier with a 305 head gasket that has a bore size of 3.840. That's what's listed, I wonder what the real size measures.

The company is Performance Marine Mail Order Supply. The gaskets are Xtreme Marine. Haven't checked them out yet...

My bad, cp performance is thee company...

Still checking them out, but being computer illiterate, well, you guys will figure it out before I do.
