  1. Is it doable to transplant a small Chevy (283 early style small journal) into a Mercedes Benz 560 sl 1979-1980 2 door roadster?
I know car isnt Hamb friendly, but need to know cuz I'm sick of German over engineering. Just want something smoothe, reliable, and easy (and cheap) to work on. Want to use 350 turbo trans.

The fuel pump feeds excess fuel to engine and engine uses what it needs and returns unused fuel to tank (recirculating). What a screwed up mess!
Just would like to go with something more easy on da brain!
Has this swap been done? I heard of Jags being done this way... Mikey

  2. Small Ford would be a better fit.

I have worked on a Chevy transplanted Mercedes of early 80's vintage before. Had a custom front sump oil pan and custom fabricated headers to make it fit. Extremely tight. The Ford 302-351 Windsor series is narrower and just looks to be a more natural fit.

Volvo guys figured that one out a while ago, search for it, I'm sure you will find some examples.

A lot of the 5 cylinder diesel wagons had SBC transplants. Thinking was that since they were registered as diesels, no smog checks necessary in CA. You could build a couple of SBC's for the price of a diesel rebuild. I think that the MB 300TD wagon was a very good looking car.

if you can fit a 283, you can fit a 454.
