I know that there are multitudes of disc brake conversions for 40 spindles out there. my problem is that i need a small rotor and caliper set up. I am running 14" wheels and do not want to change them. Western wheel is out of business and I want to keep them. all the 11 and 12" systems seem that the overall diameter will be too big for the 14" wheels. is there a kit out there I might have missed. all the front suspension on the 40 is stock except for the steering box and has served well since 1972 with an occasional rebuild. thinking of upgrading and having a little more saftety. the 9" in the rear is fine and no problems. will still stay with the early 60's chev p/u m/c slave cyl set up. using the p/u bellhousing with clutch arm on the right side. the m/c is one piece with 2 outlets. might be a bigger mess than planned but that's what hotrodding is all about. fab and make it work. this was my 1st hot rod and built in the early 70's, sold in 1978 and found last year sitting in a garage since 1980 and just like I sold it, but dirty and neglected. gotta keep the old girl, they just don't make them any more. alan
can i assume that the front brakes are stock `40? if so and you want to upgrade look into `49-`56 ford F1/f100 front drum brakes. easy to do and they are a big improvement
I'm using a brake kit with Aspen/Volare rotors and GM "metric" calipers on those spindles. Both donor vehicles came with 14" wheels so I have to think 14" wheels may fit that combo. Haven't tried it, but it seems logical. Bob
Thats what I would do but ECI [I think] has mounts/kit for the stock M11 rotor which are like 9" or so and I don't think worth the bother as you will have to change/add to the brake system....I don't know if the current MC you have will work with the disc calipers [volum/stroke, I think it will] but I do know it will work fine with the F1/F100 drums and 9" rear as thats what I had untill up dating to a tandem MC....
Am using a 46 axel. Built my own brackets and inner bearing adapter, am using Volatie Rotors and 85 S10 calipers. It is a tight fit, but works with Mopar 14X5 wheels.
The most common disc brake kits use Camaro/Malibu or Volare rotors, cars that came standard with 14" wheels, so there should not be a problem. The only issue is if your wheels where not designed for disc brakes such as early 5 spokes.
I used ECI's kit to put discs on my '38 Ford pickup. It uses mid '70s Chevelle rotors and calipers. Aspen/Volare rotors can be substituted if you want Ford/Mopar bolt pattern. I'm running 15" wheels but 14" stock steel wheels will clear. The Chevy pickup MC will have to be replaced with a dual chamber MC designed for disc/drum combo and a separate clutch MC.
