So I've tried searchinig for this but can't come up with a clear answer.

I have an old small journal 327 that’s disassembled without any hardware that I want to mock up in the frame to weld in my engine mounts & transmission support. Basically what I want to know is, what sizes/lengths & quantities of bolts do I need to temporarily bolt on the heads, manifold, bellhousing & transmission, so that I can lift and position it on the frame to tack the supports. A list of some sort would be great! Let me stress, this is NOT for final****embly, it’s just so I can get the motor onto the frame with the hoist. I plan on picking up Grade 8 stuff from the local hardware store for this. FYI – I’m using camel hump heads, Edelbrock tri power intake and a Muncie M20 if that helps

    Thanks in advance!

3/8 -16 x 1 for the intake and bellhousing, 1/2-13 x 1-1/2" for the trans to bellhousing. Head bolts are 7/16"-14, not sure of the length, but I trust your skill with a ruler to figure it out.

These are only for mock up, you need 1-1/8" long or 1-1/4" long bolts for the intake and bellhousing, again, I trust your skill at measuring to be able to figure it out. You want about 1/2" to 5/8" thread engagement with a 3/8" bolt.

you only need 4 head bolts, and 4 intake bolts to mock it up

when it's time to buy head bolts, buy head bolts, not hardware store bolts.

Thanks for the input. Just to clarify because I don't know, I need 1" long or 1-1/8"-1-1/4" long for mock up?

Also, when going to lift it, where would be the safest place to bolt to (assuming I only have 4 head bolts and 4 manifold bolts in)? Tks.

your going to need the bolts anyway, just buy them and don't torque them down.

Take a trip to salvage yard and get the bracket that come on most all small blocks that would bolt down with the intake they have a place to put a chain on it.

You can probably get by with 1" bolts for mock up. If you buy some 1-1/4" bolts then you can use whichever will go in all the way without bottoming out. Without knowing what your hoist situation is, it's hard to say what's the best place to pick up the engine from. If you have a lifting plate that bolts to the intake carb flange, that would be good. If you don't then you might want to leave the intake off, and bolt a chain to the intake bolt holes on the heads.

I don't have the lifting plate, so I will proabably just leave the intake off and bolt a chain to the intake holes. Might throw a few more bolts on the heads for piece of mind as well. Thanks again.
