    Is there any way to tell a 305 apart from a 350 without using casting numbers or removing a head to check bore size

    The balancer is smaller but you can use any one on any engine, not necessaily correctly, but they'll fit.
    Check the serial number on the pad at the RH head.
     
  3. Just jot down the casting number on the drivers side rear of the engine block. Type it into a Google Search and you'll have your identification.


    Example "3970010 Casting Number"

    Many of those had the liter displacement cast on the bellhousing shirt, on the driver's side, I think. Look for 5.0 or 5.7.
