power boosters are large for a reason, volume. a small booster will run out of vacume if used hard like towing or hard braking. most hot rod boosters are small so they look good or will fit under the floor even than you have to watch out and not drag it and crack it open.
i lived here my whole life and never heard of hotrods usa?i already have ps but i think im going with a booster. a 49 dash would be cool but im gonna see how ebay plays out.if the gauge looks funny i may just get another dash??but right now im trying to get the car to stop before it gets under way on its own power.getting it together and running by this summer is my main goal.
I was gonna suggest the old Datsun B210 unit. Smallest one I've ever seen... We put one on a 51 Plymouth using the stock pedal assembly, and it didn't even come close to hanging below the frame.

I never liked those. At least when the engine quits running with vacuum assist, you have enough vacuum left in the booster to stop the car with out pushing the brake pedal through the floor.
Yeah- it may just work out that once you have the thing installed the cross member will protect it (or you could mount a plate from the cross member to the frame rail). Good luck with the install
