They have been called Smittys since the 40's and maybe before. Dad had sets on different cars when I was real young and I had a set on my 51 Merc in High school. Dad had custom made steelpacks on his 41 Ford Ragtop that he had when I was born and that car was said to be the loudest in the valley at that time.
This is America and we have a habit of attaching nicknames to products and other things especially those that don't pronounce American at first glance. We freak out when people say "Dizzy" and they're not.
Just a to clarify...does mounting the mufflers further toward the rear of the car make the system louder of quieter?
I know a guy that drives around here in a model A with a flathead in it. Instead of running mufflers he's got cut down torque tubes as exhaust pipes out the back running true duals.
Shorter is better if you want loud, or no muffs OK too. Do whatever makes you happy. All is good. I prefer no mufflers or use 12" resonators for flatheads. I suggest not larger than 1 1/2" tail pipes with cutouts to relieve back pressure when you want loud or for drag races.
Brockman mellow tones are an awesome sounding muffler. They come in 12" body 18" overall for there shortest muffler, and 30" body and and 40" overall for there longest, and 3 sizes between the other 2. They also come steel or gl*** packed. I have the short ones on my 51 ford and they sound real nice & louder than the Smitty's. I like the Smitty's until I got these on my car. Here is his email- cj.brockman@comcast.net
See if this vid works. Its my 49 8BA running with Brockmans steelpack bottles. I think these are the 30" I forget exactly what they have available its been a few years. My idle is a little high I think I had the choke out a bit. http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&VideoID=21429970
Yeah Porters RULE... they've been around forever- -they got the spring inside and are steel-packed... I'm putting them on my Ranch next month- check out the website if you get a chance... Besides they're hamb alliance vendors! Clark and Teresa are awesome people, seriously thats no plug... I'm honored to call em my friends...
I would buy them again. They sound great on my flatty and give just the right amount of cackle when coming off a hill.
Hey mudslinger, I looked at your profile and you have a F1 like mine, farther along than I am. Did you lower the front of your F1 and are you running the stock rearend. This fall I am going to start working on mine, I am going to run a 1951 Lincoln Flathead V8 with the stock 3 spd OD ******. Should fit but will be tight. Thanks Mark.......
