Something that’s been on my mind lately. I keep a fire extinguisher in each vehicle for piece of mind, but was wondering why you never see smoke detectors in residential garages. I thought about installing one in my detached garage, but then read somewhere that it’s not recommended because dust and exhaust will cause a lot of false alarms. I just saw that there are “heat detectors” that are supposedly better for a garages since it’s less likely to have false alarms. Does anyone have smoke or heat detectors in their garage? The other thing is that for a detached garage, I probably wouldn’t hear the thing going off anyway, so I’m wondering if anyone has found a heat detector with like Wi-Fi or Bluetooth or some other way to alert you when you’re not in the garage?
I recently finished a new shop build. I put a single smoke detector in, one of the normal optical type. I glued magnets on the back, and it lives on the two-post hoist post. It’s far enough away from the bench that grinding does not set it off. If I do something smokey, I can move it temporarily outside the shop. cheers, Harv
Smoke detectors are compulsory in all new houses and rental properties in Australia. I have them in the shed and my wife's camper plus another car she may sleep in. No she's not homeless she has compe***ion dogs and travels a fair bit.
I’m seeing “heat detectors” that are marketed specifically for garages, but I’d like to find something that can connect to my phone or whatever so I’ll be notified if it goes off when I’m in the house or not in or near the garage
For 30 years my garages have had heat detectors. The laundry room and attics get them. I did a lot of fire alarm work with a company I really trusted, and they told me the garage and laundry are common starts for home fires. When I replaced a shake roof with composite shingles I got a high temp false on a 90* day. The responding fire department check it out and waited for me. “New Roof?” was the first thing they said. Got too hot for under the tighter shingles. Changed them to a higher temp setting. So I’m a believer. Today it’s all available much cheaper, and the new panels will sent a signal to your phone if you’ve got WiFi. Just poke around on Amazon and the like, do some research.
My current security system upgrade has fire, heat detectors in all garages plus motion detectors, gate alarm, video monitoring and electronic eyes on both the roll up doors and man doors. Love they neighbor. Trust no one. Buy ammo in bulk. Don't tell your wife the security code. (the last one is optional)
A client in Maryland had Tesla install a charger in her garage. They were allowed to do all the work, but I had to get an electrical permit and install a heat detector above it and tie its signal wire to the rest of the detectors in the house. Personally, I think it's risky charging those cars indoors.
