I wouldn't do the "smoke" inside the booth. After it has been applied, the "smoke" that is, you can go over the area at a reasonable distance with an air nozzle to remove any floaties. It takes a lot more air pressure to remove the intended soot than any accidental soot.
It seems some don't like this paint custom or treatment if you will. Back then everything was fair game, and if you could come up with something different you were the sh#t. Doing smoked, panels, lace or any other of the custom paint tricks was how it was back then. Check out the drag cars in motion thread and see how many cars and trucks had panel or lace jobs. What was cool once, is cool again...to some. We all have different likes, i for one have a reverance for the past and can appreciate it for what it was and is. If you wern't there you will never get it.
Amen Brother! I'm with you. The best smoke job I saw was done with a candle-gave it a softer shades of brown than a torch. I would expect in those days the candles were not "smokeless" and I think they are now. Cigarette lighter would work good, but can you even get lighter fluid anymore?? AH yes --lace and cobwebs. I used to paint scooters back in the day and people would ask "How do you do that?" I wouldn't tell them how easy it was.........................MO
because of the lack of pictures in this post I am thinking off topic pics may be OK. I make butterflys out of scrap collision parts on slow days. Some I paint and some I just smoke. Heres a few smoked around the edges with a torch and then urethane clear coat. Steve
Wow Steve! those are some mad skills with the smoke application. Any chance you could supply us with a tutorial? Put it right here on this post would work for me, or save it for the next Tech Week. A dash done with your technique would look awesome. Those butterfly's would sell for big bucks at the right show, I am thinking of "Summerfair" here in cincy, where the top artists set once a year. Thanks for the photos, I am inspired to try it again.
Another shot. I believe this one was posted by BadBob, but maybe not because I don't think he date stamps his photos.
That looks like the same car that Toptinman posted of VLV this year. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=585683&showall=1
