Hey guys, trying to get some helpful advice regarding my dads newly purchased A-V8. As soon as you start it, smoke comes from the front of the oil pan area (i think there is a road draft provision there) and the breather on the intake. It is not bad while driving but when you come to a stop, it is quite apparent that this is not normal. I asked about it on the Ford Barn but didn't really get any help other than guys telling me to pour some Marvel Mystery oil in it. What do you think is causing this? The engine runs really strong but this excessive smoke is bothering us. Any helpful advice on what to look at? Thanks.
do you know anything about internal condition (rebuilt) or how many miles on it? stock motor? post some pics
Blowby. I had one that did it too. New rings (along with some other stuff) cured it. There is a breather in the front right corner on 59AB' oil pans.
Marvel may not stop the smoking but STP should. What weight oil are you using? 20 W 50 works well in a flatmotor.
We bought the car from a member on here and he told me he went through the bottom end. I did not ask about whether or not he re-ringed it. I know it has sat awhile as it was built about 5 years ago and has only about 500 miles on it. We are going to do an oil change, probably shell rotella. It is a 1940 merc with dual carbs, an unkown cam and he said it had a 4 inch merc crank in it. That is pretty much all I know about the engine condition.
