Smokey also said that while he was best known for his ingenious ways of circumventing the rules, he much preferred building race cars with a minimum of rules (like Indy in the old days I suppose).

Everything seems really buttoned up as far as SCTA rules are concerned but I can't help but wonder how he would attack a build for any given class at Bonneville.

In a way I look at everyone out there racing on the salt and dry lakes as a Smokey Yunick type.

I think Smokey was on a different level than most people even realize. Even people that know about him.

At the 62 or 63 Daytona 500, I personally watched Smokey seat the rings in a new Pontiac at 6000 rpms while dusting a half a can of Bon Ami cleanser down the carburetor. Nothing illigal just interesting

Smokey never won indy but tried & tried. He took credit for the Jim Rathman win but that car was really the work of Chickie Hirashima. The whole story is in the Joe Scalzo book"Indianapolis Roadsters"page 159. Those years at "Indy" with the roadsters were a time when evryone in racing wanted to be a part of the "500" as NASCAR was still a regional sport in the south eastern US & no one could see its future rise to to what it became.

  6. This is a Junior Johnson car and it was banned after a couple of races, but that could not figure out what was wrong when thay inspected it.

In the mid '60's I lived near Daytona and bought GMC parts from Smokey,he found out one day I had a Terraplane with a 7x hudson motor that had bounced around the area a few years. He went in the back and brought me out a box of hudson cheater parts and started giving me tips. A few years later I managed to get the Fireball Roberts leftover parts from the pontiac place.Smokey sold me about 50 cams for a dollar each...all for pontiacs. A really good guy.

He also ran the exhausts out to the rear of one of his cars. Everyone wondered why he was using the extra pipe and the extra weight it involved. When cars tried to tailgate him during races the heat from his exhausts made their engines overheat. NASCAR changeed the rules so that exhausts had to exit out the side of the car
