The legendary "Best Damn Garage in Town" will be opening up for the very last chance to look at it's innards this Saturday 5-9 p.m. There's not much left, just an old dyno, most everything's already been auctioned off. The place will be demolished to make way for some lovely new condominiums, they probably won't last 20 years. I guess it was Smokey's wish that his place NOT be turned into a museum and he wanted his collection to go to the general public. Well his wish will be fulfilled, but it's still kinda sad to see that ugly old building go. That's the way it is in America, out with old, make way for the new.
i,for one,am glad he made sure his parts were sold off instead of gathering dust.i've read stories already where if it weren't for parts auctioned off at smokey's the car wouldn't be done, and that's a good thing.
It's all gone guys and I missed the first sale. It's just some walls and ghosts of what went on in that legendary place. His daughter was running Carbon Printing Press out of there putting out his book. But now it's all over, ain't nothing but a coffin. C'est la vie said the ol' folks, it goes to show you never can tell.
I own a few of Smokey's books... he and Carrol Smith are the only two authors I've ever read who can write automotive books on an engineering level without making them read like the bullshit I suffered through while in college. Long live Smokey.
Ed, they're in my canon too--I think you'd also like Grumpy Jenkins older and oldest books and Dave Vizard's books on cylinder heads, etc.

Long live Smokey. [/ QUOTE ] His autobiography is one of my favorite books - DAMN, he was one busy guy. Between the broads and the trips to Ecuador, it's incredible he had any time left to work on cars. His tale of how he got back home after WWII ended is laugh-out-loud funny. If you haven't read the book, GET IT.
Smokey left us with the real value, a huge collection of his knowlege and humor. The facility he used didn't matter then, so it doesn't now.
A buddy was in on the first auction ,got the indy SBC and the 1966 NASCAR Chevelle destroked 396.and a few other pcs.Sad to see another legend like him go.
