I'm glad to see the continued progress! I remember watching the car run against Tommy Auger on a Vincent for Top Eliminator at Santa Ana, probably the summer of 1953. Although the bike won, the car made a long lasting impression. It was the best looking dragster of the era - the other notable cars were, of course, the Bean Bandits, Chrisman Brothers, and Yates and Mickelson(sp?). Too bad Ollie Morris is no longer with us to see the completion of the restoration, but I'm sure he would have been delighted that you've carried on with the project!
Cool! Your car was in one of the video clips Ryan posted last week. I definitely remember the Offenhauser lettering on the side. Can't wait to see it finished.
Yes, my Grandfather was at the 1955 US Nationals. He never lost a race at the Nationals. When the finals got rained out, Fred Offenhauser didn't want to pay and have the car shipped for the finals so my Grandfather just never showed up. For the 55 Nationals, it was the first car to use a Chevy V8.
What is amazing is the history and Dan can tell you some great stories. I have seen some of the original photos never been seen that Dan's Grandfather took while working for Offenhauser and to say the least they are priceless. You are doing a wonderful job on this Dragster Dan.
Awesome!!! Last week I was watching some old footage that Don Tuttle shot of the Smokin White Owl . You've done a great job.
Dan, what an awesome job! We'd love to have you and the Smokin' White Owl as our guest at Eagle Field! Rocky
The car shows up a number of times in the video of the 1955 Nationals at Great Bend. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/?p=10921 I only watched once, but think it is at approximately 2:30, 3:20, 6:25, 7:55 and 9:50
UPDATE UPDATE!!!! Car is disassembled for paint. It's been a long process, but it is finally getting finished!! I'll post pics as I get them!
As a child I saw The Smokin' White Owl at Santa Ana. I'm looking forward to the day I can see it again. Great that a piece of history will be making passes again!
Awesome!!! Hope it is finished to make the Hot Rod cover car reunion at the end of March!!! Truly one of the first successful rear engined dragsters!!!
