Man oh man, I didn't mean to start a war of words here and I'm now more confused than ever weather I should use any or not????????? Actually I used only cam lube when installing rebuilding after the cam nut let loose a few years back, and then Dura Lube after brake in, or is it break in? I'm using a lead additive in my gas at fill up also. How about the Zink additives in the crank case is needed on these older engines before unleaded gas and modern day oils? (No wars ok guys?)

Freudian slip, pun, or just a typo? We report. You decide.

Just a small point here. That is actually hyperbole, embellishment, puffery, swagger, even bluster. It is most assuredly not fact since you cannot know the total volume of anyone's knowledge, nor how much was "forgotten," so there is no way to make such a comparison, and therefore cannot be ascribed as a "fact." ... like when guy A, who has never even see guy B's car, says he can beat car B in a race... it's just noise.

I love learning about automotive history, but it's silly to discount the reality of scientific advancement. If you don't think we know more now than we did 60 years ago (or 19, when that 'book' was printed), you are deluding yourself. How about we learn the old history, and then integrate that knowledge with the knowledge base that's progressed since then?

  5. I really believe that most of the products sold as "additives" are of little use to us. There are some temporary fix type of additives that may help you get some place (home perhaps) so a proper repair can be done, but for the most part they are just profit makers for the company marketing them.

Up until relatively recent times, a good quality motor oil had all the additives it needed to protect your engine for a reasonable number of miles, and a good maintenance regime was all that was required to keep your whole car working well for a very long time. Since the zinc and phosphorus has been reduced or removed from mainstream motor oils, old school, flat tappet engines need an additive to prevent contact wear between cam and lifter surfaces. There are some good quality oils on the market that claim to contain proper amounts of ZDDP to keep cam and lifters alive and well. Valvoline VR1, Joe Gibbs Hot Rod Oil, Royal Purple HPS are but a few examples.

Some of us may choose to use a more available or trusted brand of oil that does not have the zinc phosphorus additive. One of the few times I'll use an additive is treating the Mobil 1 oil I put in my '63 with enough ZDDP to keep the cam and lifters healthy.

Back in high school ('60s) our auto shop teacher one day put a rubber seal in a glass jar filled with straight tranny stop leak and set it on the shelf. I don't remember the details it's been so long but every week that seal got bigger and bigger. So it may indeed stop some leaks, wonder if it has a down side?
