I thought it seemed expensive too, but are these other wiring harnesses, that you guys are comparing it to, cloth braided? Looks as if this one is.. I can see how that would be more expensive to build..

Personally I still wouldn't pay $800 for wire, but heck I won't even pay $350 for wire and a fuse block.. I just wire them up myself.

  2. the cloth wire is a nice addition to the s0-cal wring kit, and i'm sure it increases their cost some....but cloth covered wire isn't really that much more expensive than regular wire if you buy it in bulk. i like it and get it from rhode island wiring supply

I tore out the last cloth braided wiring harness I ever want to see 30 years ago.
I'm with 41 Woodie and Chad S. I'll take the Ron Francis harness and run with it.

I went to the SoCal online catalog and you don't really get anything but a batch of Braid covered wires wrapped in tape to make a harness and the ends. You still have to buy a fuse panel to make it work.

  4. i can see why you think that , but the new cloth covered wire is very durable....they actually put the cloth over the normal plastic cover. i prefer working with it because it comes on big loop rolls and lays out nice and flat...not all kinky like the regular stuff

    check it out:

Doing a '32 with a flathead, and turn signals as the only "accessory", I spent over $300 in wiring parts. This includes all cloth wire throughout the car, asphaltic loom, old-style fuse holders and terminal ends. I can see how a manufacturer might want to charge $795 for a kit with cloth wire.

    Hotrod66....check your email.

I asked SO-CAL to email me a copy of the wiring list...forwarded it to you a moment ago. Hope it's what you're looking for.

Funny...it was faxed to So-Cal from YnZ's Yesterday's Parts (http://www.ynzyesterdaysparts.com/) . Wonder if that's who supplies the harness to So-Cal? Bet they aren't getting $795 for it if they are.:eek:

I would wonder about the cloth wire being fire-resistant. Francis wiring is very high quality, I don't mean the kit I mean the wire itself, very high quality insulation with printing on each wire (about 2ft. apart) telling you where it connects. Color coding matches factory colors in most cases. Good quality, switches, relays etc.
I could understand cloth on a Pebble Beach Restoration, but the idea of watching it burn to the ground doesn't excite me much.

I think most if not all reproduction cloth covered wiring has a inner layer of vinyl/plastic whatever it is they cover it with underneath the cloth.

At least that's how the wiring is for 30s & 40s cars that I've installed reproduction wiring in(stockers).
Sacramento Ford makes alot of the cloth covered wiring....

    Hmmmmmmm.

For a measley $370.00 I bought FORTY THREE 25 foot coils of cloth covered wire in various colors/sizes of from Rhode Island Wiring when I rewired my '34 three years ago.

The wire cost for the '34 3 window I finished this past fall was $349.00 and that included a chromed turn signal switch. Pretty much the same cost for the same guy's '32 roadster I did last spring.

This is state of the art insulated wire covered in a lacquered cotton braid.

I use it all the time. I get it inside of a week from the good folks in Rhode Island.

I lay it out in the vehicle just as if it were to be permanent then I remove it and I braid a cloth covering over the entire harness then re-install it in the car.

Wanna see what it looks like? Climb under the dash of Ken Gross' black '32 roadster. That's one of my cloth wiring harnesses.

I believe the re-sell, not make, their cloth covered wire. I don't believe they can legally manufacture lacquered cotton covered wire in the state of California.

  16. If you talk to JimA he will tell you that So-Cal is not even selling this product anymore.

  17. Good to see you back on here!

  18. cloth covered for me too. the '36 is going to be, my bosses A is but my '47 was already done before i got it.

Been pretty busy lately. Had a couple of nights off and managed to get on-line and browse.

Had to go up to Snow Hampshire and scope out another wiring project this morning. Even got a free breakfast -- thanks Chck ! It's gonna be a KILLER car when it's finished, hopefully, by mid summer.

In the process of downloading pics so I can put 'em on a CD and send 'em off to Chuck so I gotta get to work again.

I'll stop by now and then.

  20. Do you have prices on your harnasses?

I need to have the vehicle.

I build the harness in the vehicle, remove it, run it through my braider, then re-install it in the vehicle.

No two vehicles are the same (tail light placement/type, instrument placement/arrangement, brake switch, ignition switch and headlight switch locations, etc) so the time to build the harness varies.

Maybe I'm just stirring the pot, but I found this on the YnZ's Yesterday Parts website, specifically here: http://www.ynzyesterdaysparts.com/diagram.htm
