So I am thinking of using HAMBers... In a bad way.

Got my wife's '51 engine bay stripped. Gonna paint inner fenders and firewall as best I can with the motor still half there. Pretty hard work cleaning everything up and getting it ready for Eastwood under hood black.

One of the things I was plannin on doing to this car was rewire it. As I tore a lot of wiring out today, I began to get pretty nevous - I hate wiring.

That's when it came to me. I'm gonna have a wiring party for HAMBers. Kinda like a HAMB chop, but wiring my wife's car. Yep, using HAMB folks for my dirty work... Need at least one wiring expert that has patience to teach me as he works...

Don't know when it will be yet, but expect free beer, food, and entertainment (me, fucking stuff up).

Man, I wish there I did'nt live so far away or I'd be there in a heartbeat. I love wiring from scratch, fixing hacked harnesses sucks. Good luck with it man.

Ryan, May I suggest using the kit from Ron Francis. I used it on my 53 wagon and had never done anything even close.. As a person who hated and was afraid of electrical it was very easy to do with their kit, they had very helpful tech folks and the instructions were great (only had one question). I bought the larger panel so I could upgrade to AC, PW or whatever at a later time if I wanted to... The colors seem to align with other GM products which has been nice (and other companies seem to use the same)..

Wish I was near I would love to participate....

    I have to disagree Boones.

I hate the Ron Francis kit I have, as a matter of fact, I am replacing it as soon as I get the chance.

I have used Painless and Haywire and I would use any of them before using one of his kits. I had a tech question and the guy was a total dick to me. The kit was not as complete as the other 2 I have used.

So I badmouth him every chance I get.

Any of the kits are decent and I think you will find it pretty easy to install.

It would be more fun to watch Ryan do it from scratch? [IMG] Using a kit is way easy Ryan. I think you just want a bunch of HAMBers over to drink yer beer and tell you how much of a dork you are.

Lock up the beer until the car is wired. Nothing worse than an angry wife stranded with a broke down car. Be traditional and old school, buy several rolls of fabric covered wire and solder the connectors. [IMG]

Ryan...Neal is right. Go with the haywire kit.I put it in the sedan and it was real easy...even for a dumbass like me!!! Great tech support too if 'ya have a question. I had several and they were real helpful on the tech line. However if the wifes shoebox burns to the ground I'll deny ever having talked to you about this matter!! [IMG] [IMG]

    Hey Ryan,

I haven't tried the other kits, but the Painless kit is great. I'm not an electrician by a long shot, and don't want to be, but with the Painless kit I was able to wire my truck up by myself in 2 afternoons and it worked the first time! They are very nice kits that I recommend to everyone I know building a car.

Who said they can get deals on the Painless harness? I need another one.

    Good luck Ryan!

Ryan, I agree with the others that recommend either Painless or Haywire. And, I also agree with the others that discourage the use of Ron Francis kits. This is based on my personal dicussions with Ron himself at a couple NSRA events. I do admit that I am a wiring dummy, but I am just the person he is hyping his kit to! However, when I asked him questions regarding the kit and what it included he treated me as if I was demented (which I may be!) but his treatment of a potential customer gave me agood idea of what I could expect from him in the future. Doodly squat! I scratched him off the list.

  22. How many circuits you going to run? Most of the big panels are overdone unless you need AC, power windows etc. I have found these panels from PARR to be kick ass, $59.95. They come with the power wire, you just add fuses and your own wire for the rest. Trust me, YOU CANNOT buy these components cheaper separately, last car we built our own and my wholesale was more than the retail of this panel.

  23. The specs, 3 fused constant hots, 3 fused switched hots, fused tuyrn signal/flasher circuit, fused 4 way flasher circuit, and a fused relay circuit. 5.5x4"

Disregard these last two posts if you need a bigger system [IMG]

the kits are easier, granted, but you can go buy a fuse panel from a late 70's caddy and most of the wiring for less than the cost of the fuse panel alone from a supplier, if you look closely, they are the same thing or damn near...

a little more elbow grease to use this one without splices all in it, but entirely possible, did it for more than one old car...

for ease of install, get a kit...

for all that wiring fun, get used parts [IMG]

  25. Ryan I recommend Painless over the others mentioned. I personally would never buy another Ron Francis harness.I have my reasons......... [IMG]

Buy plenty of heat shrink. Soooo much nicer than seeing unfinished terminals and reduces the chance of electrical jumps. And remember to put the shrink on before terminating. [IMG]

And a neat trick, especially for those running SBC's. Put one of these little guy's on the small wire. Simply unscrew this instead of obliterating your hand trying to remove the small nut from the solenoid. Use anywhere you are removing the item constantly.

Root, not sure what was missing in your kit but mine was complete with everything. I do know it is more expensive then other I have priced but I did not want an all black harness since it was my first attempt I felt a color harness would be easier to do and track and I did not want the fuse panel terminated for me so I could route as I felt necessary for a clean look. Thou like you, when I have a problem with a company I will always not recommend them..

I would suggest getting more panel then you need now espcaiily if you even think about adding other gadgets and since it is going to be for the wife and she may like other conveniences

I'd sure like to be there. Sounds like fun. Especially if you get a good croud and take a vote on the best location, best routing, and best fastening devices used. It shouldn't take over a month to do it. [IMG]
