Hot Rods So, I ask my buddy what his neighbor has in his back yard.

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Rocky, Jul 9, 2017.

  1. I was visiting an old friend this afternoon and as I'm leaving I see a round top sticking up in his neighbor's yard. I pulled back in and asked him about it. Turns out it's actually his side yard and it's a left over 37 chevy coupe shell left over from his last gasser project. He made me a helluva price on it and it's pretty solid....needs rear pan and passenger side lower 1/4. I noticed the floors have some rust perforation but the top is really nice. I dunno....I'm thinking it over.
1....The price is something I can afford but.......
2..... I'm almost 10 years into my 34 ford coupe. It started out as a shell too and I had to source all the body parts separetely....cost a lotta time and $$$$ and I'm still not 100% done. Wish I could find a complete 37-38 fordoor donor.... jamies37-2.jpg jamies37-1.jpg jamies37.jpg

    Not much there.......
You just about have to have another Coupe and most likely the "other Coupe" will be more complete......so ahhh what's the point?
With that said is there anything really there? Yeah but what?
In my opinion building up that Coupe body close to stock would be too costly and too much effort. I think you would be better off finding a more complete car.
It could be a used for a 1950s early 60s "jalopy racer".
Old GM frame 30-40s.....six or straight 8
    Heavy pipe roll cage.....
    Race seat....
Simple sheet metal side panel(where the doors were)....
Simple bare. Rails up with pipe or cage around the radiator....
Here is a thread about them....https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/vintage-dirt-track-cars.556500/

I'd use it for body panels to support the build of a much better 37 Chevy. Just too much missing. Gary

  7. ................................I like that idea. That way it doesn't have to be "pretty" or "complete" to be cool.

Save it even if you just pass it on. It needs to come out of the weather.

Hope he has the doors and deck lid. Those are expensive and hard to find. Still worth dragging home.

  12. ...I'd be on it now!,...those things are gettin scarce, BTW, I have everything it needs cept the frame,doors/trunklid, but lids are available in glass and tudor doors can be made to fit with some work. ...37-9 frames will work.

It's (some of) a '37 Chevy coupe. While not a deuce, or a Willys, it's still way up on the desirable list (parts or whole). Doesn't deserve to be rotting to the ground. Rescue it, sort out plans later.

Id grab it if the money was right. Get it cleaned and in primer, Slowly look around for for parts. No need to start bodywork yet. If you get tired of looking at it in a year move it on.

Doors and a period correct grill shell would be the most basic needs, a front end would be nice.

Ive had a 37 coupe located for a while, its complete but will need a mile of welding wire to make it in the road. Talking with the owner but the moneys not right.

Grab it Rocky! At least to save for someone I'd go gasser route ala Kiwi Kev' Willys. 4 dr donor ( from a field or Craigslist) for frame, title, front sheet metal and small parts. Straight axle. Maybe just go full fiberglass doors, trunk lid and front end with lexan side glass. Whatever parts come along cheap.

  17. Granted you are up to your eyeballs with the 34 Coupe but there is also light at the end of that tunnel.

37 Chevy parts are not near as hard to come by and are a lot less expensive, drag it home, cover it up and let it sit until the time is right or someone want's it more than you. HRP

Besides the doors and trunklid hurdle, do you have somewhere to store it? Is it something you want to build?

x2 - just because an opportunity presents itself does not mean that you have to jump on it. do some quick math on all of the parts, etc that it will take to get it to the level of build that would be acceptable to you, plus a few manhours - if all seems good buy it, or help him find another new owner for it

I'll go against the tide and say finish your coupe. That money could go towards getting you on the road

finding decent coupe doors will be the hard part. if you do buy it and are lucky enough to find rotten doors, you can use the tops of 73-85 chevy truck frt. fenders to simulate the roll on the door bottom.

  24. No, as much as I'd like to grab it for myself, I have to face reality.
1...no place to store it although it could stay where it is...about a mile from my house.
2...no extra $$$ to build it
3....only enough space to keep one car...one car garage and I'm NOT giving up my ford coupe to build a 37 chevy coupe.
If anybody is interested in the chevy, just drop me a PM.
