My Galaxie was not useable as daily driver with the close ratio 4 speed and 3.70 rear. I had to slide the clutch off the stop sign and 3,000 rpm at 70 mph just don't cut it. I have a spare Mustang t5 backup for my Comet and extra tail housing and top cover ***embly from one the Comet ate at the track. I tried to find an S10 tail housing but $250 to $300 for a trans just to take the tail shaft off seemed high when I'd have to do mods to get the speedometer in the 62 to work.
The more I looked at the extra Mustang tail housing the more I thought I could modify it to work and my speedometer will work with the Mustang set up. so I started measuring and cutting to move the shift box to the front area. After I had the box about where I wanted it so the shift handle would be in the 4 speed hole I installed the shift block on the shaft that controls the shift fork and with everything in neutral and centered I marked the hole for the pin diss***embled the unit, cut and drilled the shaft I fit the box and cut parts so the unit would shift and had the box tack welded. I could completely ***embled the trans and check that it shifted correctly diss***embled it, then returned it to the welder for finnish welding. I mounted a t5 adaptor on a Lakewood ****ershield I had rotating it to the drivers side on top so the shift handle would be directly in the opening for the 4 speed shifter. Pictures show proggress so far. I plan to bend the cut off Hurst handle drill, install it, and fabricate a new crossmember. This is a factory original 406 3x2 4 speed car so I don't want to cut and original parts so it can be returned to original if wanted later.

Awsome fab and initiative to do something beyond the norm, but I have one word for you: TREMAC... A healthy 406 and about ten seconds can reduce that T-5 to mush!

It is possible in a heavy car, my wife's comet is making more power than that 406 could dream of and has lasted 48,000 miles and a couple of mid 10 second p***es with 0 issue so far. If you can shift it should last a long time.

X2, very slick, but I would measure that t-5s life expectancy in minutes. Saved for future reference nonetheless. Slick indeed.

You boys have never beat on a t5 like I have! LOL. I had a t-5 just like this one in my Comet with a built 363" Windsor launched at 3,800 pulled the front wheels in first and second with wrinklewall slicks power shift at 5500 rpm lasted about 400 p***es till I got stupid and installed a Cevlar clutch disk. I've been running a Tremic T5 in it with a 425 stroker and Mcloed composit disk 4,000 launch 6500 power shifts shifts 50? p***es and held up so far.

Get the G-Force 3-4 bronze shift fork it made about 200% improvement in the 2-3 shift on my Tremic. This Galaxie will never see 4,000 rpm or a power shift it'll be my daily driver the Comet is my race toy.

LOL One who is broke from replacing the parts I blow up on the Comet! Just slung a rod on my 425 Stroker in the Comet that I'll have to pay for so I can't afford to be tearing up two at once plus alot of the parts on the Galaxie are rare expensive and hard to find.

Innovation, I like it! Just a note..From the welding the tailhousing will tend to shrink in the weld area which will make the rear bushing for the driveshaft yoke not be concentric to the main shaft...Need to positivly clamp/support tailhousing and weld in short sections, allow to cool inbetween. May have to make cut on opposite side and weld to pull the bearing back...But your welder should know this, just say'in..
