I wouldn't offer him ****. I'd play the "dumb card". Tell him you don't have a clue what it's worth but you just want to build an old car. I wouldn't show up in a $30,000 dollar rig either. He may not know what it's worth either. He probably does but I hate to price another mans product. I bought a 50 mercury this way 2-3 years ago out of a storage area. He told me he knew what the old cars were worth and he'd have to have $500.oo for it. Luckily I had the money on me. I worked on the car a couple of weeks but needed to sell to help my daughter in college. It brought a quick $7500. Just enter into the deal thinking what you really want to pay. My .02 TP

I had a friend that showed me a corvette very similar to this one in southern Wisconsin about 5 years ago. Actually at first glance I thought this was the same one but a little more weathered. But after studying the pictures, I don't think so. Hood scoop is different, don't remember the flames, or the lettering. He wasn't home the day we stopped but my friend said he wanted $6,000.00 from strangers for it, but he could get it for me for $4,500.00. It also had a rear end in it but looks very similar to this one. I considered it. I p***ed at the time because I was building another shop and didn't want to cut myself thin. Buddy was always going to take me back there the following year but we never got there and forgot about it until I seen this post.

  3. i'm from MINNESOTA ... NOT WISCONSIN...SORRY MORE SMILY'S SHOULD HAVE BEEN INJECTED INTO MY FIRST POST TO THIS THREAD....
if this car has weathered through a number years outside .. winters .. moisture and freezing can do alot of damage ... then hot summer sun does wonders to the fibergl*** layering too

i have found many old fibergl*** boats left outside around here and they looked sound but were just eggshell fragile

    good luck

have ya thought of trading him something ...that may be a clue as to the value he desires

On Corvettes is the Vin on the ch***is (which has been replaced) or on the body ?

Did he build it and race it , if so the price might be higher as he had a stack of bills and memories,
But if he bought it as a pile like its sitting now then probably he did not pay much for it,

I think you need to talk to him about it , there really is not much there if you were ever going to race it ,
and if you were going to put it on the street it will cost big $$$$$

But it makes great "yard art" and I would buy it just so I could be known as the crazy guy with the old vette next to his garage :)

He never raced the car it was bought just the way it sits. The vin is now attached to the drivers side door sill, he told me that it was supposed to be on the steering column but I find that hard to believe. He knows very little about the car in fact I think that I know more than he does from just the input from the HAMB(what a great place) I think he is looking for somewhere arround $4500 for the car and he does have some extra parts and pieces.

what kind of parts....and what kind of spindle mounts...and front end...4 bar .? hairpins ? coil over..? leafsprings etc....what was under it for a rear....and rear suspension....the more old stuff off the car the better.... might be worth more that way in parts and seperated than as a whole..... brandon:D

  7. Brandon;
I agree with ya... It's the sum of the parts that sometimes makes the deal worth doing..

It is correct that the VIN is attached to the steering column, note in my engine pic just to the right of the dipstick tube you will see the VIN plate. On the earlier Vettes they attached them to the door pillar. As to the $4500 it would probably need some pretty decent parts to make it truly worth the price. As we all know though Ebay and the Barrett Jackson effect has driven these cars up to a somewhat unreasonable range.-Jim

  10. I don't think it's worth more than $2-3K as it sits, it's been sitting outside on the ground for a ton of years, that car is probably pretty rough.

  11. exactly, this is not a $100 four door impala fellas, it's a 62 corvette. with a ***le and vin it's worth a minimum of $5000 and that would be a good buy. someone would restore this car back to show room specs. allot more guys would pay good money for it for parts and ***le. pre-68 corvettes are through the roof price wise regardless of condition. i am a vette guy, and i would put the car back as a g***er my self, but, there are alot fewer of us than there are guys that would restore the car.

here is a "birdcage" starts in 63 so no issue here. they tend to rust out at the bottom. they are hard to find and even harder to replace causeing vette death in a lot of cases.

Been a while since I owned a straight axle (53-62) Vette, but I think the vin was on the steering column until mid 1960 and after that on the left door opening near the door hinge. Pretty sad shape but worth saving. I think most of us have the same uncureable disease....car fever. We look at the old car and all we see is a car fixed the way we would like to see it in "finished" condition. Good luck....I hope you can get the car.

Close, you just have it backward. The VIN was screwed into the drivers door jamb until early '60. It was on the steering column from then until '62.

Cool barn find. I'd scoop it up for $4500.

Duntov, good to see you posting here, I'd like to scoop that up and run as a part of the 62 contingent of the NJ outlaws, something that could get down the quarter without embar***ing the marque too much. It does need a touch of TLC here and there though. Here is my candy car that I suppose is either M/Sp or g***er style. Have some stiffer front springs and a two inch piece of tube to bring her up a bit. From 1964 till I bought her in 82 she spent as a drag racer. No NCRS for this girl.

The engine is 427ci with Dart heads and I have a close ratio. Weak point with be the stock 370 gear (the owner that raced her removed the engine and drivetrain) and I haven't found an Olds/Pontiac that will slip in there just yet. When I run her I will have to granny the start as well.

The candy paint (PPG tricoat) cost me a ton and with after I removed all of the stress cracks, I feel a hankering for something I can put my foot in without any remorse.-Jim

unless you are in love with this car i wouldnt pay more then a grand , 4500 you can get a running car, not a vette but somthing that goes or a hell of a project save your money unless your rich and can blow 4500 on a turd , people on here say they would buy it for 4500 tell them to send the money and make a few bucks, Its easy to say when its not your 4500

I think there are a lot of guys on this forum that haven't paid much attention to what pre-68 corvettes go for.

If the fibergl*** is not turned to dust (i.e. it's fixable) give him the 4500.00 and be thrilled.

However, don't buy it with the idea of restoring it to stock as that would be insane.

that sure is some rusty plastic

  18. Hey, shoot me some numbers if you have em.
The VIN numer is supposed to be on the drivers door jamb till 61.
I'm in the C-1 Registry and can try and find out any info on it...IF it's in there. Later, Phil
Here's what a birdcage looks like on a 58-62. Lot different than a later model. This is a 58 I'm working on.
The metal work is all aluminum on 58's. Switched to steel the next year.

You are right...first mistake I made all day. I had a 60 with the vin in the jamb and it was an early production car.

A crazy old friend of mine traded a hot rod airplane that they wouldn't let him fly any more for a '57 Vette that looked as bad as this one. It wasn't this modified but had been a road racer and had lots of repairs with some wrong panels used. It had been left outside for years. It is now black and beautiful! The plane had to be worth $20,000+. I'm not a Corvette guy, though I'd love a '53 with a 261 inline and 4 speed, but they have value tacked to the name. Could you justify cutting up a nicer one to build a g***er? This could be a rare chance to get something really unique. This car has a history and it will surface eventually. As has been said the ***le and ven are worth a few grand. If you can get it do! It won't be hard to find a buyer if you don't want to do the work. Get it into the hands of someone who will.:)

    Lets see:
    2 functional doors for parts
Rear quarters appear in tact and not flaired.
    Door handles
    Rear top cover appears intact.
Misc stainless pieces which you can not beileve how much they
    bring unless you need one.
Not to mention what the spindle mounts are worth.
    Jeez
Plus you have a corvette that you dont have to feel guilty about cutting up.
I have a 61 and a 62 and I would love to own that one too!!
Bet it was a rad car with the ghost flames, chopped top.

    This thing still has value!!

My guess is in the $5,000 to $6,500 range.
More if there is real history.

$4500 is a fair price. If you can't swing it, find a buddy that can.

It would be a CRIME to put that back to stock.
