Hot Rods So, if you WERE going to run red wheels with white walls, what color would you paint the car?

I think the red wheels, which I like, but look even better to my eyes with trim rings.

As for red wheels being overdone, I think it falls in the same category as any other longstanding popular (classic) 'look'. Blue jeans, tan or gray slacks with blue blazer, '32 Fords, '40 Fords, wing tip Oxfords, C2 Corvettes........just because these things have a large fan base....does that make them "overdone"?

  8. I agree Ray.

I don't know about the trim rings, all the wheels I ever painted red on one of my cars had no caps or rings. I also still think that red wheels in true hot rod fashion need to be Rustoleum Red and done with a brush. LOL

Of course I am the quintessential hot rodder and have the final word on all things hot rod.

Maybe I am just old and jaded, but I don't think that red wheels are overdone. I like em on the right ride. I do think that, "Hey look at my red wheels!!!" is way overdone. That is really kind of bubble gummy. Red wheels do not a hot rod or custom make. ;)

  10. To each their own,I personally like red wheels, with or without trim rings, and IMPO red wheels ALWAYS look good on a black car. HRP

  12. I hated, I mean hated them for years. Then I developed an interest in cars that were timeless and stayed cool through the years. Now I dig them on the right car.

What I think turned me off was that the rat rod guys polluted the look with their junk fabrication, BBQ black rattle can paint jobs and red wheels. It took me awhile to appreciate the distinction but there is one. The cars above are proof of that.

I think it's time we steal the look back.

Falcongeorge already posted it, but Andy Southard's RPU looks so good with them, it's worth a repost. :D

Red as an accent makes any color pop, but it's easy to go overboard. If asked, I would have said that also painting the engine, firewall, and grille insert would have been 'too much' but it sure looks good here.

I also think the Pierson Brothers' '36 coupe pulls it off pretty well.

  15. I think the big turnoff for me was the Toyota guys that were building a traditional rod, because it was rattle canned flat black and had shiny red wheels. Gack o_O

There are cars that look real good with red wheels and cars that do not.

Some of these examples are as fine as froghair by the way.

Until I saw Southards RP, if someone had said 'Ima gonner paint my hot rod dark metallic green with red wheels!" I woulda thought "are you f*ckin nuts, its gonna look like a Christmas Tree!!"...But sometimes the most counter-intuitive stuff works...

Danny, Danny, Danny...It goes on the CAR, not on the damn wheels!!!:D:rolleyes:

  21. I've never owned anything with red wheels but I do appreciate the look and believe they look good with almost any color. Cream, black, and dove gray look particularly nice with red wheels IMHO. Whitewalls...eh...depends on the car and the style of the build.

BTW - Calling someone a hater is a ridiculous attempt at silencing someone who might hold a view other than yours and, in my experience, is used by those who cannot tolerate diversity of thought or an exchange of ideas. "Haters gonna hate" is a particularly inane and meaningless statement. Hate is a word that I don't take lightly. Calling someone a "hater" is something I would reserve for Nazis and Stalinists, and others of that ilk. To use it otherwise, lessens it's impact and true meaning, in my opinion.

Shit, back to red wheels and WWW.

Red wheels look good even without WWW. My late wife picked this color off of a one year only 2004 SSR -" Ultra Violet Metalic". IMG_2733.JPG

I live in Hyde Park in downtown Austin. There are people in my neighborhood who leave their Christmas lights up all year and when you walk down the street most evenings you catch a faint whiff of controlled substances.

If I rolled up to the coffee shop down the street in this thing I'd be beating the chicks off with a stick.

Blue and white with red. But on a non-hotrod,running full caps is the way to go with just that little band of red showing. My opinion only. ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1452830419.830974.jpg

    Geez guys, lighten up! :cool::D

You know what I think is inane? Posting that you don't like red wheels with white walls on a thread titled "What paint color looks good with red wheels and white walls?"

I mean, do you go into a Taco Bell and tell them you don't like Mexican food?
