Hot Rods So, if you WERE going to run red wheels with white walls, what color would you paint the car?

more maroon. As soon as I saw this car I thought "man, if only he'd paint the car the same colour as the wheels!"

No, but I go to Burger King and ask for a Big Mac...

As to the best color choice, I'm voting for a shade of tan. A nice vintage almost "dirty" look to it, easily achieved by spraying the color over a black base or sealer. The paint has to be nice and slick, a good deep shine so it plays with the eyes of a casual observer. And no matter how much or how often it's done, and I may even be a hater on this idea, blue and red looks wrong. Yes, I've seen it more times than I can account for, saw my 1st one in the early 70s, then as now I think it's a mix of wrong and ugly. And even though someone did green and red back in the day, just as bad. If you're doing some form of commercial display advertising I can see popping off of different colors. In aesthetic application, like car colors, bad news to my eyes. This, coming from a lifetime of finishing all kinds of special and significant cars, and I admit my taste sort of follows the normally conservative approach taken by the OEMs of the past. I couldn't imagine a flashy Packard roadster in dark green with red wire wheels, or for that matter any shade of blue with a red wheel. Has it been done on some restorations? Yes, and just as wrong as if it were a hot rod. As always, your results may vary, tax n title extra, void where prohibited...

Back in 03 I built the 2004 NSRA giveaway car and I used red wheels with white walls and painted the 30/31 RPU Wheatland yellow (GM truck) with a red interior

  8. My observation from the early 60's was that red wheel color was done on most cars while the owner was working on and driving the car and the body was in original color and spots of primer. As the body was finished, the owner would pick any color he liked without a thought for how it matched the red wheels. I saw too many poor matches of red wheels with contrasting body color, and I used black wheels back then for my builds.

But to answer your question, just about any color you like would be traditional to go with red wheels.

  9. This thing is cool. I love the color. image.jpeg image.jpeg

Ever color looks good with them. Unless you're trying to please the cool kids, then you'll paint the car black, like the rest of the sheep.

OK ,i'm sorry in advance for hijacking the thread. But beaner posted some pics of cars early in thread with a red A model coup, with the Veda Orr type spinners (2 bar) on it. what kind of wheels are these and where can i get them, so i can use this type of early knock off? Now back to red wheels, i have them on a white AD truck.

That RPU was a rocket ship on wheels. Most fun driver I have ever owned. Great vision on the build. The car would not spin a tire. Pure torque and perfectly balanced.
I haven't seen it since it moved to the west coast.

  17. Any more pics? I'm curious as to how the rear tires looked mount on the 7" rim. The build up sheet on the web says they were 255/70/15 correct?

Black or blue will do the trick.

An off white such as Dodge Cool Vanilla or Harley Davidson Birch White

a pearl white could work too if you were up to a modern look

Up until the popularity of mag wheels I thought red wheels were a symbol of performance. I have only owned one black vehicle, my first pickup. It was originally yellow that I painted black and yes, it had red wheels, baby moons, and white walls!
