So I'm going to build a "Rudy Truck"

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Richard D, Sep 30, 2007.

  1. Say it isn't so! Those things are an abomination! They are un-traditional! All of the above may be true, but I have my reasons. It's really because I want my RPU to be MORE traditional. For those who haven't seen my project, the link is in my signature line below.

And by the way, it WON'T be a "Rat Rod".
    Think:

    NOT:

I screwed up by building my frame before I had ALL of my components in place. I had too much "Z" in the front, so I cut it down. Now I am trying to fit a radiator in there, still not enough room. So I think, "I'll get some '32 rails, then I can put the axle under the frame, instead of suiside style, because it's really too low. But now I'll need a new crossmember, and the rear "Z" will be too much, shit I need to build a new frame." So fellow H.A.M.B.er Unclee and I are talking about it over several Natural Lights, and he says, "Hell, you have the '41 Dodge cab out in the driveway, Why not put it on this frame, and have something to drive to the Lone Star Roundup?"
The '41 cab is behind the RPU:
[IMG] The firewall is 10" taller, so radiator fit will be no problem.

I figure I can have fun with this thing, and take my time doing the RPU up right.

As I said, it wont' be a "Rat Rod", maybe more of a 70s style thang. It WILL have paint(no Mexican hookers painted on the doors; real ones inside, can't make promises), no spiderwebs, skulls, or iron crosses. If ya'll don't want to see it here, I'll keep it to myself.

If you want it to look right, take about 10" out of your wheelbase.

Keep us posted, I live off progress pics these days....

  4. That's part of the plan for the RPU's new frame; the axle will be under the crossmember, roughly 10-12 inches back. Also not so low.

  7. All I can say is you've got an awesome post count in little over 12 months!!!!!!!!

  8. The boy don't get out much!

  9. I have a few sets of slot mags, maybe a stake bed made of varnished wood, and I have one of the old tapered beer kegs for a fuel tank. Maybe not.

  10. I don't have much of a real life, just my garage and my computer.

no offense, but upon further consideration, you really aren't building a "rudy truck".

but here are some good reference bits:

  13. Probably not H.A.M.B. material, but a lot like the stuff I remember seeing in the magazines when I was a kid in the 70s. Flat beds with wide rear tires and wood stake sides, diamond tuft crushed velour interiors, kind of lowrider meets street rod meets custom van. Hell, I could leave it rusty and sell it on Ebay as a rat rod for $30,000. Would save on paint costs.;)

Maybe not the place to ask, but I will anyway, anyone got some old 70s photos?

An "A" Team version would be so Rockin'. Plus it's black with red accents.

  15. I put that in the title because it is a later model and will not have fenders, but it will be more like the blue one, as far as style and finish quality, but with some 70s shit rolled in. Should be fun, I can have a rod to have fun with while I gain a little more skill(and a lot more $) for the RPU, and do it more 60s show rod period correct, with heavy flake, tuck and roll, lots of chrome, etc.

Rudies are what we called MODS back in the day. Is it going to have a Vespa motor and wrist-twist shift?

I figured out that if each of Richard's posts took 5 minutes to compose and upload, that he would have spent roughly 323.5 hours or 13.48 days online.

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should.

No offense intended, man, but maybe you should get a job so you can buy something worth building? Model A and 32-34 truck cabs aren't that expensive.

    Define "aren't that expensive".
Where I live, those cars don't exist. So a Brookville car is the only option. I consider those affordable, but not cheap by any means. I am building one of these trucks because I got it cheap and it is the oldest thing I could find. I want something to get my feet wet that doesn't cost so much or require 2 (or is it up to 3 now) years wait to get. When your budget is 100's instead of 1,000's you start to get pretty creative.
The idea I have for my truck sounds a lot like what he is planning. It will be fun for a little while and then when money gets better, I can get that roadster body I want.

Also, someone mentioned his truck not being a "Rudy truck". Why not? I just come to grips with this monikker and now there is a chance it doesn't fit. Is it the fact that it will be finished, as in paint and no rust?

I see Model A and 32-34 truck Cabs in decent buildable shape on my local California Bay Area (read: Premium) Craigslist from $600 to $1000 fairly often.

A guy I know got a decent 30-31 Coupe off that same local Craigslist for $600!!

  29. I was kidding about,"it beats working," I do have a job, a damn good one. I already have the '41, when it's done I will finish my '34 Plymouth. I'd like an "A" some day, but my Shovelhead is going to get finished in between these two. I also want a Corvette, jet boat, bigger house/shop, etc., etc.; so for now I work with what I've got.
