I’m not sure things have changed in the last 54 years. For my 3 years there ( 67 - 70 ) , I never bought new tires because the roads were made with crushed corral. They literally shredded your tires when you turned. You would be pressing your luck to think you could get more than 5,000 out of a set of tires. So there I said it, I ran recaps on my 65 Sunbeam Tiger….but the scenery of the ride was so worth it . 1967 Ala Moana Park
As you were lifting off the runway, did you look down and see a blonde driving the Inman Chrysler down a parallel highway?
Man I dont think anyone could see the photos of all the hot rods lined up in front of the continental club for mark fords going away party last night and not think “I need to be driving a hot rod in Texas” safe travels
So many good points to comment about. First, you are right about the change. Even though it was a 100 or close yesterday ,in the middle of the night walked outside and felt that bite, wind blowing -chillier. Now about that roadster, anyone care to guess the channel on that girl front to back? One of my faves...
Just to clarify.....revolves around spouse, kid(s) first....then Hot Rods. Goes with saying ? No. Unfortunately some guys that's not the case, spouse, kid(s) aren't first on the list. Sadly. I get your point though, at times it's man and machine and it's our time to rule the world.
Hey @Ryan Lets just cut to the chase Amigo! Consider yourself to be one of the luckiest "hoodlums" on the face of the earth ! You have the privilege, of being able to run one of the most influential and coolest Hot-Rod websites, that ever existed! You have have a great family, and you have relative youth, and you have your health! You have the necessary annual luxury, of being able to leave Austin and the heat, to travel across the water, to a paradise that is a depot of rejuvenation for you, on a variety of different levels, that most don't ever get to experience! And to top it all off, you get to write about it and share your thoughts and photograph's with a dedicated audience, that gets it! Kauai, awaits your return, and so do the jungle fowl that are everywhere!
I pound these keys from the bowels of Phoenix airport, running on fumes and coffee, my mind frayed like a spent cigarette. This isn’t a bitch—just a madman’s journal, scrawled in chaos is all. I take nothing for granted.
Hey @Ryan That element of pounding the keys, back in the day, when tough as a battle tank "UNDERWOOD" typewriters, were the king of the city desk, at newspaper's, the guts of them were amazing like the various parts of a HOT ROD. I saved these particular parts/pieces, from one of those old dinosaur's, that had been taken apart, truly great craftsmanship, by people that built things to last a lifetime! Now its just a laptop and WiFi, that allows journalist to post from anywhere, that is a luxury no doubt, but there is a loss of feedback to the finger tips, from the motion of the mechanism that pounds the ribbon to the paper! Your results may vary! Thanks from Dennis.
My buddy moved from Phoenix to Hilo a few months ago, packed his 39 Chevy PU in a container and all his tools, he said it only took two weeks to get there. So, you could be cruising all summer long.
Ryan you should write a hard boiled novel with Hot Rods, Dames and intrigue. “That babe came into my life like a hurricane and left like a tornado… best 34 coupe I ever had” We’ll you could do much better, thanks for the ride. Dan
“The summer is over, or so they tell me.” Hello, Ever since we started with hot rods and drag racing, summer was for building and cruising. There was so much of that constantly as teens, including going down PCH all the way to Laguna Beach for a midnight stroll on the famous 9th Street Beach or better known as “a Thousand Steps,” beach. But, it is a nice sandy/rocky beach, good for a long “walk on the beach.” In the summer, back then, the atmosphere was outstanding, but the steep long climb back up those stairs was tiring to say the least. And we were athletes, too! Jnaki No, there are not 1000 steps, (around 220 steps seems right,) but in the daylight, it is daunting to look down the tunnel. At night, who cares? So, over the years, we always thought of Memorial Day in May as the start of Summer surf. Mainly due to the South swells just beginning to come up the coastline. But, when school got out in June, most thought that was the start of summer. When the first South swell hits So Cal, for us, that was the starting feeling of … it is going to be a great summer… But, after 3 months of coastal traveling, even to Baja, Mexico, the summer season, officially wound down on Labor Day weekend. After that, the crowds dissipate and the beaches are back to normal. Sort of… Then, we are all back in school, but continue to dream about our travels, chasing the waves during the day and cruising around at night. The quote: “to each his/her own…” says it best. We all had another life at one time or another and it was just a big part of Summer teenage-20 something lifestyle along the So Cal coastal areas… YRMV “Everbody’s gone surfing, surfing USA…” August summer day, in So Cal? Overcast? What about the famous all day sunny day(s)? There were a few of those, every year, but for those that live far inland, it is hot and sunny. For those that live on the coastal area, a lot of the days start off overcast, foggy or both throughout the day. Sometimes those conditions linger on until there is some sun in the late afternoon… At least, that tough teenage kid did not need a wetsuit in the summer !!! And two, quick, reverse, nose dive, pull outs, just before the pilings of the Huntington Beach Pier. ! Good bye, Summer, time to get ready for the fall varsity football season.
I think there are a whole lotta people that need to look at the top on this car.....just say'n with all due respect....
