When I began getting into cars, we either chose a cal look vw or mini trucks. I chose the cal look vw scene to start in the early 80's. Once I had my fill of building many VW's and being inspired by the early 80's hot scene clubs like Lucky Devils, Road Zombies, Scacred Karts, Shifters, etc, I went full bore into traditional hot rods. Two years ago, I decided to recreate my high school car, a 64 vw notchback. Now that I am a lot older and way better at building stuff, I can now build the dream notch I always wanted. So this build will have a lot of 80's Cal look influence but now with 21st-century techniques and innovations in the vw world that we never had back then. I will update this build as I get stuff done.
Dang my dude, you opened the VW floodgates haha... I may have to join in. Looks great with the fuchs!
Yep Notchbacks, Squarebacks, and Fastbacks all cool. My wife had a Squareback in HS. Looks like a fun build, I’ll be watching. Dan
Nice. I had a few Sqaurebacks and Fastbacks, love the type 3! Notches were bringing way more $$ in the South Bay even in the 80's, so I never had one.
A good friend of mine bought this Type 3 RHD wrecked and I got to do the repairs. It was a fun little project and something a little different than what I usually do.
Rare notch! I’ve never seen one in person, only in pics. I don’t think VW actually imported those, but were imported by a few dealers that had the clout to pull it off, probably mostly in California since it seems most of the one you see are out there.
They were never imported into the USA by vw. All were privately brought over, usually by servicemen and such.
Kind of as this was well before grey market cars were a thing. All the notchbacks in the USA were brought over by private citizens with no dealers involved.
My old neighbors were really into VW's, I think the notchback is the only model that they didn't own, and I saw a bunch of them, their friends had some oddballs too.
And I am green with envy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had to pass on a notch years ago, had cash in hand ($2000), but her brother was in lock-up and she was worried about him finding out about selling it...Damn shame.
Kinda strange seeing one without a sun roof. Or I'm just not seeing it....I always disliked the metal sun roofs...Have always licked the notches, One of the few models of VW's I have never owned....
It's actually rare to have the sunroof as most were hardtop. If I can make it work, I am going to put an original bug sliding ragtop in it.
Minor update with help from a friend who is a sheet metal wizard. We got the front apron shaved off the license plate bracket area. More to come as we get more done.
Another minor update. ISP West https://vwispwest.com/ now has rear apron reproductions in steel, and they are perfect, which is a big help to the type 3 crowd.
