So I found a wheel today and I know they are worth some money in good shape. What do you think this one would be worth?

Send it to Pearlcraft to get fixed up and you could probably retire, lol. :D

As it sits, it's pretty rough. I'd be interested to see what it's worth in that shape.

I'm not a fan but its an accessory thing that has its own little market that has just taken off like mad. Restored to perfect, you easily hold 2-3 grand there.

    Doc.

    Hmmm... that's pretty cool.

I bet the accessorized out lowrider guys would give you the biggest chunk o' change for it.

Properly restord you could do very, very well.(as stated)
Or it would look killer in the right rod.

Its pretty far gone. It's in a 39 sedan delivery or so it seems to me. it has a delivery type door on the back, but it does have quarter glass. its odd though the area the quarter glass is in looks like its half paneled. hard to explain.

There was a kick ass period perfect roadster here on the hamb that had one of these steering wheels on it and it looked fucking awesome! I'm more than likely wrong, but something in my brain keeps saying it was maybe a Burbank Choppers' car. Who's ever it was, it was killer. Wish I could find that pic! I can't imagine somebody wouldn't like that wheel, it has so much style and personality.

I would fix it up and use it on something equally as killer! I said I was curious before about what it'd be worth. Since nobody has said, I would think it's gotta be worth $200 as is.

I think it might be cool in my 54. I need to find a good restorer and see if its something I even want to do. May be more than I want to spend.

Last I heard, Pearlcraft was upwards of $800. There's some guys here on the hamb that have their work. They could do that one the justice it deserves!

And this is just my opinion, please don't take it the wrong way. But that wheel would look so much more at home in a hot rod or a Klassy Kustom tail dragger like a '36 Ford. I'm usually all about the "it's your car, do what you want" deal, I just don't think it would be "right" for your '54. It's like mixing two different eras of customizing.

I hear ya. I would rather put it in a taildragger myself, but I don't have one. I might just hang it on the wall for later in life when I have a car its better for.

*Edit: apparently I'm off on the value.*

Those wheels are awesome and rare as hell. I almost bought a whole car just to get the wheel. There are a couple guys that can recast the plastic on it. It will cost you around 1200-1500 to restore that one. The last time I saw a perfect one for sale he wanted 5 grand.

  29. I've never seen one like that. The guy who restores them here has one with the spinner handle at the bottom of the wheel. It's FUCKING expensive!!!!

I have one of those wheels that came in my '40 Master Deluxe 4-door sedan. It's in quite a bit better shape than the one in the first photo. I paid $500 for the car. In the Chevs of the 40s catalog, it's called an accessory wheel. I found a husband and wife in the Bremerton, Washington area that say they can re-cast the wheel in plastic that matches the original look. The plastic handle parts in the spinner area are reproduced, believe it or not. I've been looking into replacing the plastic on the wheel rim with finely crafted wood. My brother is a furniture maker and has some ideas about using black walnut or cherry. What's most surprising to me is that the wheel fits right on a later model Chevrolet column, probably on any GM column. I tried it on the column from a '77 Malibu wagon I plan to use in my '40 and it fits fine. I think the horn might even be made to work, but I don't know about the turn signal canceling mechanism. There's about a 1 inch gap between the bottom of the wheel and the top of the column, but I think that could be fairly easily dealt with. I've only seen one other of these wheels in a car, and that was at the Vintiques Northwest Nationals show in Yakima, Washington. BTW, the other name for these spinners is a "necker knob." Can you guess why?
