While I dearly love a good ******* match, all I've got to say is there's some damn cool stuff on this thread. Keep 'em coming.

"coolest engine" thats a tough one.During the thirties Studebaker built a straight eight flathead indy car. I believe any big flathead straight eight with 4 carbs an an old style speedway car exhaust would be really cool.

Guys like you are a dime a dozen. Too brand biased to realize that I actually did say something constructive as well as hurting your precious feelings about the Chevy. I don't have to keep anything to myself. If you like SBCs, bully for you. I don't.

I'm a "he-man" for not liking them? Building street cred? Where do you come up with this rubbish?

    I love a good ******* match! :)
I have built many Racing Engines, Blown Alcohol Etc. over the years and there is no way I am calling Falcon George out on any Engine related matters, he could school me in an instant.
Just an observation from a "Third Party" :D

I'd heard about guys like you in here.

It isn't idiotic just because it doesn't conform to your bias. You clearly have a rigid and obtuse opinion on what cons***utes a hot rod. Not everyone has the same view. The "history" of the hotrod, isn't the be all and end all of owning one.

I don't have a hemi. Does that make my opinion lesser than yours? I would like one in the right car. I'd bet that my BBF would drag your Hemi all over town, but that doesn't mean much either, does it?

Opinions were asked for, my opinion way given. Sorry it doesn't align with yours.

Actually what was asked for was what you thought was the coolest engine not the lamest. You could start a what's the lamest Hot Rod engine thread and bash away on the Chevy . On this thread let's stick to the coolest.

ive got the machinery to do this kind of work, no problem, so, what head is this it cant be SBC. Ive been checking on this and the SBC head would have to be split down the center with a new section welded in to lengthen as best I can tell

I can fully understand Roothawg's affection for the Chevy small-block.

My very first V8 build was a '57 283, topped with 520 casting Power-Pack heads. Neat, compact, nice-looking and a proven performer. Fits neatly where a Ford flatty normally resides, a great hot rod engine no doubt.

Then I discovered the Pontiac V8. To me it was kind of like a SBC deluxe.

Same stamped-steel rockers mounted on studs, that design came from Pontiac engineering and was shared with Chevy when they both introduced their new V8s back in '55.

All Pontiac heads have had fully-machined combustion chambers since day one.

The intake manifold is separated from the hot crankcase oil by a baffled sheetmetal valley pan, you can remove it without having to pluck out the distributor.

The cam doesn't need an aftermarket cam ****on to keep it from walking fore and aft, it has a nice retaining plate bolted to the block just behind the timing sprocket to control that.

You can remove the timing cover without loosening up the oil pan, it comes off nice and easy with a nice flat gasket surface set at a 45-degree angle at that joint.

The actual size of a Pontiac V8 is right between that of a SBC and a BBC, maybe a tad closer in size to a BBC. Roughly 100 pounds heavier than a SBC.

Parts availability and affordability is second only to the SBC, so it's really practical as well as being super-cool, Daddy-O.

Here's a 1959 Tri-Power setup for your viewing pleasure, that center carb with the choke will help that truck fire right up on a winter morning and run like a champ!

Once she's warmed up hit the loud pedal and crack open those two end carbs and listen to the beautiful song that only a Pontiac Tri-Power can sing. :D

Cool. I liked my 390 GT engine until I swapped it out. FEs are the best sounding engine there is.
