So what have you learned recently - either the hard way or the easy way. Usually I end up learning the hard way, but the most recent thing I learned I actually learned it the easy way - at least it didn't end up ruining a perfectly good part (which makes it an easy lesson in my book). Here's what I learned: I was in the process of remounting the carb on my truck - had it all bolted in place and was starting to attach the fuel line. The line that runs from the flathead pump to the carb is a copper line and it doesn't really line up very well. As it turns out, I started pulling and pushing on the line attempting to get the fitting to thread into the pot metal carb top of the Holley 94 carb. What I learned, before actually stripping the threads of the carb top, is that when working with copper fuel lines and pot metal it's better to attach the fuel line to the carb first, then attach the carb to the intake instead of the other way around. I came to this realization just in time to save the carb!

Anyone else learn something recently - either the hard way or the easy way - that they'd like to pass on - and hopefully save someone else a ton of grief?

i learned that Elvis died 3 days after my 3rd birthday! i also learned that the official cause of death was NOT a drug overdose, as is commonly held to be true, but rather heart failure due to a defect... his father ordered an independent autopsy but that he ordered the results to be sealed until something like 2026!

...damn. was hoping i was the first smartass to jump onboard this ship but then i looked back adn saw Topolino Kid's post... hey, would love to come out and see that Topo some time. i love those things!

I learnt on tuesday it is a long drive from Rapid City SD to Elk River Mn in the freezing rain.
The week before I was taught at metal meet : to weld a patch panel on use my 110 wirefeed set on high, set the tip at about a 45 degree angle to where you want to tack and hit the trigger for a instant, repeat every three inches, gring off the highspots using a 6inch grinder disc, hand file to perfection, and keep repeating until done. There was no warping and there was no visable seam.

I learned that if you have a late model DT466 and you are losing large quantities of oil with no visible signs of oil loss, the fuel injectors are leaking oil back into the fuel tank.

I learned that new spst relays have a diode in them to protect electronic devices, and if wired backwards that diode pops instantly!

it took four 15 dollar relays to find the problem, and one 4 dollar relay with no diode to fix it.

Always... ALWAYS. Buy the good stuff first. Because you'll just end up replacing that cheap shit later.

And... that I should listen to my friends.

Because they have been telling me that for years!

  15. I learned yesterday that when you go to the emergency department on a Saturday for a work related injury that happened the day before you had better make sure the doctor fills out a Workmans Compensation form!!!! I have had an injured hand for 2 years now and have to go in for surgery. When I asked about time off on comp she found it had never been written up for comp. Sucks to be me.....

You can put dam near 2 gallons of antifreeze in a small block if you forget to close the block drain cocks.

I learned that the front bearing cover bolts on an A-833 4spd OD trans are NOT blind holes, and in fact all four of them go right into the 6 quarts of gear lube inside the trans. At the same time I also learned that one of the bolt holes for the side cover is the same way, though the others are blind holes.

It took me the better part of 6 months, a permanently stained driveway, an undercarriage that looks like the Exxon Valdeze, a wasted clutch disc and a lot of gear lube thru the trans to figure this out.

Before you use an air wrench on your serpentine tensioner pulley bolt, make sure it is either a left or right hand thread. Gary

I learned, after 65 years on this planet, that you never stop learning something every day...

I learned there are still people out there that still don't understand this concept...

I've learned that the bigger this place gets the more retarded threads get posted and push good threads to the bottom.

    Just sayin'
