Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 36cab, Aug 23, 2012.

  1. Agreed on both statements.

It is suppose to be fun and for the most part it is.

And yes, let's keep a good thread goin'. There's nothing like a good strong discussion while listening to all sides and maybe, just maybe we can all find a little common ground.

Remember guys, we're all suppose to be one big happy H.A.M.B. family! :D

For those of you who may be too young to remember those times - THIS IS A G***ER! -

Note - this all in fun on my part - not all g***ers were Willys coupes and they all did not have straight axles but they alll met the same rules as the Hill & Zartman car.

I was a spectator at the Nostalgia G***er drags. The cars look great, sound great...But....They all launch the same ,hard with minimum wheelspin...Bracket racing is what is looks like. It's a driver's sport ...Not all that exciting for spectators.......

The irony is, thats where most of the out-dated g***ers and AWB cars wound up in the early seventies, running brackets, with 14x32's, tunnel rams, seventies era wheels and powerglides replacing the "period" parts. The current "G***ER!!" scene looks alot more like the first round of Pro bracket or Heavy circa 1975 than it does like gas cl*** in the mid sixties. Just a simple statement of fact.

    Nose high for life!!;)

  8. Okay, I stand corrected on the "slammed" look part. Here's an original picture of an AMC Gremlin g***er that ran BB/GS and built back in 1972. I know where this car currently is and have been trying to buy it and restore it back to the way it was.

Well then we need to get you behind the wheel and out on the track..lol Honestly the G***er Racing Series is a bracket race. If it was run heads up, then cubic dollars would take over and you'd only have a couple cars racing.
You can't say there weren't a couple exciting times out there, like the flat black Austin with the injected big block was trying to climb the rails. Way short wheelbase and way high horsepower, equals ill handling. Then there were the 4 spd guys and the Anglia rollover too.
But back to topic stuff, I give anyone credit for getting out on the track and running hard. These old cars aren't aerodynamic nose up or down and most run way faster than the factory ever meant them to. To many rules force people out and to few will let anything in, choose your poison.

When did the nose come down? When the ch***is became sophisticated. Tubbed, really tubbed and pro street is no where near g***er cl***ification. Some of you know this. And are pushing for these cars to be allowed here, if only for discussion. Look to the publications of the day. You can see the transformation taking shape. Then, ***********. The cars posted here, must fit the criteria. Otherwise it becomes another 'car' site.

I saw your car!! I used to drag motorcycles and then came the hyper Japanese stuff with wheelie bars, air shifters and budgets I couldn't afford.Sometimes a little less power,a bit more wheelspin is more exciting to driver and fans.

There was some moments of intense compe***ion for sure. The 55 Chevy that ran over his crankshaft was a stick car, yes?
We got there at 1 pm,by 6 pm me and my bride were fried from the sun and noise :D

My car fits between both AA groups, wont go fast enough for one because of the ch***is cert, sits too low according to the g***er guru that runs the other group, although it was built and sits how it did in 67 and is probably more period correct then some that he lets run. I'll do my own thing and run with the guys who want to have fun.

I have only read parts of an original rule book. I found it interesting that a stock automotive-type frame was required thru 1967 and the fender could be altered for tire clearance. I doubt the big tires fit with a stock type frame if the car was a mid 60s look-alike? Maybe a post-67 look-alike that I am not familiar with. Tubbers with nose bleed straight axles have a unique look.

    micky69,
I am not sure who gives you grief about your car, but its awesome. There are some who don't want me to run 'their' events because I have mufflers, and I look and laugh at what is allowed in 'their' events. "Own thing" is the right thing. If they want period correct they missed the mark and driven alot of folks away. The last thing the sport needs.

That's what Rick (1939fiat) said to me once " don't worry about the history of your car, go out and make your own "

took the old 56 to Great Lakes Dragaway today.

just love shifting gears and hearing the little 331 scream. Goes through the traps at 103 and 7700 rpm. 13.0 and will get better after a clutch adjustment. This car has been raced since 1962 and still maintains many of the same components.

not a fast car, but it sure does draw looks of approval from the onlookers.

Cool car, Mr. Fairlane. I was looking it over at the HAMB Drags. The whole "g***er" thing is really about having fun with cars. Some of us get it. The racers and spectators at Mokan a week ago Saturday definitely do get it!

Look, some g***ers didn't have their noses jacked up even in the early days. Some of the best (last) g***ers, like Fred Hurst's 'Cuda, and Ohio George's Malco (multi) Mustang had them jacked even during the last days of the cl***. Those cars had full tube ch***is, with the rear ends squatted down, really, so the noses looked high proportionatly.
So build and run your car the way YOU want it to be, and screw the idea that all cars had their noses in the air. They didn't. Make it how it works and looks right to you.

I don't recall seeing a single post in this discussion claiming that all g***ers were nose up. Neither of Ohio George's Mustangs were tube ch***ied. He used Willys frames cut in half with the back half of the frame flipped upside down and reattached. True story. Don Toia's Incognito Maverick was also Willys underneath. I like that even though the Stude in the avatar is tubbed, you can't fit a basket ball between the tire and fender. I saw Mickey's Austin Sunday, and thought it turned out pretty well. It does seem strange that the G***er Guru's era cut off is mid year '67.Square tube frames, four links and cars that sit low (and are fast ) are out.Yet he does allow alluminum blocks and heads. Other than maybe Volkswagons, what other g***ers were running alluminum engines?

damn, 2 words on the hamb that can and will get a firestorm going, g***ers and ratrod......discussions are one thing but sometimes things seem to get hot in a hurry....its really pretty simple , g***ers are to each his own, what we remember them to be(and what the rule book says they were lol) i remember cars with nose hi stance and tires stickin out in the back, evenm as a kid i didnt like the rear end of them. always looked like they didnt finish the build.as a young gun in the mid and late 60s(very young gun)i always thought a g***er was a car that was plucked of the street and had some goodies add to make it faster but still in all its street clothes. ready for the commute to work on monday morning.i can still see some of these cars in my mind going to work on the monday mornin straight axles and all.now ratrod.... never mind i hate them anyway...lol

After 6 pages of opinions, arguing and a little bit of fighting, the answer to my original question comes down to this - the g***er noses came down when tire and ch***is technology improved and that was probably around 1967 (give or take).

As far as the plans for my '48 Austin- since it is an import car I think I will go with a retro-ricer look- real low stance, turbo 4-banger, fart can exhaust, air dam aero-package and of course the mandatory ridiculously high wing! :D

  29. Oh man, don't even go there!

There are a few so called g***ers that have tall wings on them.

They look like **** but then that's just my opinion.
