Bo Huff called me Harvey Haulass. We were pretty drunk, and he started telling me about this guy outside who had a shoebox Chebbie with a stroker motor, and the guy was thinking about adding a straight axle and as I said "Hell yeah!!" his face screwed up in disgust. And he said "Ohhhh, you would like that kind of shit you damn Harvey haul ass!!!" and we got into a little difference of opinion.

But....he's a boat load of fun, he's a whiskey bottle killer, and really dedicated to the Kustom life-side of things. He isn't scared to say that he cuffs his pants, combs his hair back, or call somebody hep, and OSR and CKD really like that. His cars are very nicely done in his own kind of styling, his collection is staggering, and he knows his stuff. I don't think a lot of people really know about him because of his location. He's out in the middle of nowhere, and although he's been cranking out cars, they never really get out to the coasts where the Primedia machine can show them on a regular basis. He doesn't parade his cars around any circuits, he just builds, parties, and builds. Oh yeah, and he can sing like a mo-fo too.

  2. I haven't seen OSR lately, but when they first came out, Bo Huff didn't get all the ink. A guy named Tony Farnetti got a lot of coverage too, and I think his stuff was pretty nice too.

Yep, I always pass up a good story if has anything to do with anyone I don't know. Being available, well, I don't swing both ways, so...

  6. thats due again to having the same connection at OSR, Tony and Bo are like brothers or at least good friends. and again due to local with Tony as well. Oh yeah and as hemi wrote Bo is all kustom man, has to be WWW no 60's style (which I love) and absoultly no black walls or barely whites for him, its all about his time the 50's..

The amount of ink in most magazines is directly proportional to how close and accessable you are to the magazine headquarters or the big city car shows they frequent. Bo is in the middle of nowhere Utah and he doesn't go after the Riddler or AMBR for rich clients. He's a car guy doing what he likes to do his way. Sadly, not many in the cities understand that concept anymore. Even Ed Roth when he was at his most famous was always interviewed at the big shows and his cars were shot there or in a professional big city studio. They seldom bothered to travel to Utah to see what he was up to when he wasn't in their world. Real estate guys always say "Location, Location, Location". Guys like Ed, Bo and Norm got out of the spotlight by getting away from LA & the cities where the magazines don't go. There, the pressure is off and they do what they want to do. And they only surface when they want. Why would a magazine spend a few days driving thru the desert and staying in cheap hotels to shoot Bo's place and a few cars when they can take a hop to Frisco, stay in a good hotel, eat at good restaurants and get say, Roy Brizio, a dozen other shops and businesses that advertize in them, lots of cars for features and the roadster show in the same amount of time. 16 cars in the middle of nowhere that don't feature any of your advertizer's products or 600 at nationally recognized events and advertizer's shops with lots of famous people. Where would you send your troops if you were running a magazine to sell to the masses?

To wherever the person's shop is that I want featured.

Your analogy is correct to some extent, but no matter where a talented builder is located, if he's talented, and--more importantly--people know about him, I'll travel high and low. A lot of big name builders live in big metro areas for obvious reasons, but if, let's say Brizio, were to pack up and move to Idaho, he'd still get pretty much the same amount of ink. Look at Bobby Alloway or Alan Johnson--they ain't living in no big cities.

wow, good example of people replieing to posts that they didnt read very well.

all he was saying is ive only heard of this guy a few select places and they acted like he has been around forever and is one of the greats. not just simply another very very good builder.

he was asking what the history of the guy is, and as of yet all hes realy gotten in replie is a bunch of trash talking, and a few people saying hes a good guy and turns out nice stuff out of the middle of no were.

i think he was aware that he turns nice stuff out and what hes currently doing.

what is bo huffs past is what realy this boiled down to. has he been around forever and by chance alot of people have just never heard the name.

is he a "local legend" like he was always a big player on the X coast.

and now hes getting more main stream reconition?

thats his question. some of you that evedntly know him well enough to get all huffy in his defence could probably just answer his question.

he wasnt all "his stuff is shit, what a jack ass, i rule he sucks"

the closest he came was saying it wasnt realy his thing but he was still curious about who this guy is, were he came from.

its not that hard to read a question and answer it with out startin up drama.

    realy

    its not.

that being said i dont know shit about his history, may one of these guys do

I'm really looking forward to the finished product.

Sometimes the response you will get depends on HOW you ask the question. If you ask your question with a condescending tone (such as he did), I would suspect you would get the kind of reply that he got.

If you REALLY didn’t want to start any drama, you would have just simply asked the question:
“Tell me what you know about Bo Huff”… and left it at that.

Some come to mind but I don't read magazines, or get them, just because of the builder. The only article I've seen of Merc John was when he did Eric Maaske's plymouth way back when. Again, not much of an article, but, still cool. And why aren't some the stuff the Kennedy Brother's do make it (OK, the owner's want to be in seclusion???). And of course Charlie Hasscal.

bo huff laid the first pinstripes on my first hot rod ever, and i couldn't have been/still am super stoked on that... the guy is a generous real deal guy and i admire his work.

can't speak for the magazines you mentioned but you should check out his car show, he eats, breaths and drinks hotrod and has seen a lot more cool cars than i wish i had. i think he has a lot of cool ideas that any serious kustomizer could learn from...

so when you ask who is he? that sort of seems like a loaded question thats almost seems unfair, because it's juxtaposing your lack of familiarity with a guy who has been around a loooooooooong time.

Guys, If my "condescending tone" was aimed at anyone, it was at OSR and CKD, NOT Bo Huff. You can take it anyway you want.

Most of my focus/research/learned knowledge is based around the early 50's era of customs, as thats whats pleasing to me. Thats the style Im building my car to. While I know of most of the current top builders, many of them I know of from reading the HAMB on a regular basis. I had never heard mention of Bo Huff on the HAMB or in any other magazines besides the 2 mentioned earlier, and it just sounded strange to me. I stop onto the board several times a day, have used the search function like crazy for the past year, and never ever came across the guys name once. All of the other builders listed elsewhere in this thread, I have seen discussion of many man times. Is it so weird that when I only read about this "kustom legend" in OSR and CKD (2 magazines who's text you regularly have to question), and NOWHERE ELSE, that I wondered just who this guy is? Once again, you can take it anyway you want, I have no bad feelings whatsoever about Bo Huff, or his workmanship.

Damn Chad, can't you go anywhere without making everyone hate you? :D :D

I gotta say though, I have heard the name Bo Huff, but I couldn't tell of or describe a car he's built to save my life. I've read most of the above but could really use some pictures to get a better idea...

At this point, you just want to fight. You can fight with yourself. I asked who the guy was. I wanted to know his history. The OSR/CKD "Bo Huff worship" seem'd strange (if you dont see their treatment of him any other way, thats fine), maybe that was the wrong thing to bring up. I know those magazines have a poor reputation here, but his, obviousely heavy, association with them is not my fault. They exaggerate everything. Sorry for asking.

I asked a local friend who has been building hot rods and customs for 30+ years. This guy has never touched the internet in his life. He had never heard of Bo Huff before he looked in an OSR/CKD magazine either.

I really don't see why are you guys riding him so hard. It's a legitimate question... I've heard lots of people ask "Who the heck is he?" Hell, I had to ask it once myself, and so did all of you unless you are his brother or mother. He's basically unknown, 'til his movie comes out. :D

He is an OSR and CKD superstar, they love him to death, and if you didn't read those two mags, like Chad said, there's a pretty good chance that you've probably never heard of him unless you've met him. I don't see anything wrong with that....

He does work in a small shop in BFE, he builds cars, sometimes they make it into a mag, he loves what he does, and so does a hundred other guys. Splittin' hairs and rippin ol' Chad here a new one is pretty silly...

  29. Any one show me which one is the Cameltoe Merc? Every time I do a search you don't want to know what comes up,.............

Mootz, thanks for those pics. Those cars look great. None of the Bo Huff cars that I have seen in OSR/CKD compare to those examples of his work. Too bad OSR and CKD dont put his best work foreward, as those cars are some top notch work. Perhaps they arnt "rat-rod" enough for OSR/CKD. Too bad the only people that seem to publicise his work aim for such a "rat rod" crowd.
