Hey Hambers, now into day 3 of road trip. Yesterday we did Grand Canyon, today Zion and Bryce and route 12 East. Zion was beautiful, Bryce not so much, route 12 was Magnificent I've never seen a road with so many beautiful views. A local rancher I met at a gas station as we began our drive on route 12 said it was a beautiful drive, well let me tell you, that's like someone saying the Mona Lisa was a nice picture of a girl. Southern Utah has some of the most beautiful country I've ever seen. I took a ton of pictures, but my cell phone wasn't able to upload them to my computer, thus no pics sorry. Will try again when I get to an area with better reception. If you ever have a chance to do the good ole USA DO IT, forget Europe, forget Asia, forget any place. Go see our country first it is incredibly beautiful!!! We've met people from Norway, Germany, Spain, Japan, China and from all over the US. I'm so stocked about this trip and it's only day 3. Till next post, take care.
Nice to see that your trip is going well. You're right , this country is absolutly incredible if you slow down and enjoy the ride . good luck on the miles ahead .
You should keep all your post on one thread, that way it's easy for us to follow along...... and get those pictures posted. Maybe I'll see you in Columbus.
I am in Moab Utah right now. Just got back from a day trip to Arces. Wow. You are right beautiful country here in Utah. I can't wait to see Zion and Bryce Canyon.
Have to agree with ya Driving is the best seeing the USA in a roadster !!!! We jusy got back from LARS show from coast to coast !!
Thanks everyone, the trip is going well so far. Almost got in a wreck yesterday just north of Durango, Some lady driving in the right lane, I was in the left lane, decided she wanted to turn left so she did, right in front of me. Made a hard left and hit the brakes hard, just missed hitting her left door. Rode the Durango & Silverton today, long ride but it was way cool, great scenery and I like old steam locomotives so it was fun. Some pic from the last several days, my phone finally decide to co-operate with me. Well guess not I've tried twice to load them and got no where. Maybe tomorrow.
Although I have never done it in a roadster I drove all across you're beautiful country in my '56 Ford in 2010 and it was probably the most memorable time of my life. I have traveled all over the world but that was by far one of my favorite trips. You guys have an amazing country! Enjoy the rest of you're trip and keep us posted
Thanks all. I've been trying to post pictures, but for some reason the HAMB doesn't seem to be able to upload my pics. I tried 8 pics last night and it never went through. So I'm trying again. Ok finally, still in CA. Here goes. #1 Old gas station on old Route 66, East of Barstow. #2 Another gas station on old Route 66, but this one is still alive and operating. #3 Somewhere on old 66, just us and the buzzards. But still way cool #4 Old gas station past Oatman AZ. between there and Kingman. Hopefully more to come tomorrow. Still days behind on pictures, computer not co-operating. Right now in Limon, OK We were in Durango yesterday and rode the train, pics soon, I hope. Next stop Speedy Bill's museum in Lincoln, in a day or two We've met so many nice people along the way, it has restored my faith in the American people. I know we all seem to focus on the bad, but believe me our fellow Americans are the best you could ever hope to meet and interact with. No disrespect to all our neighbor from around the world as we've met some really nice people from around the world. BEST trip of my life so far. Stay tuned.
Damn, I missed you rolling through Zion National Park. That's my neck of the woods and I'm sorry I missed ya! I'm guessing you didn't go into Bryce Canyon National Park. From the road to the north you can't see anything, but once you get into the park it's completely unreal! If you come back through this way gimme a shout and I'll buy ya a burger! Hey daddio211, Yeah, we did Zion, Bryce and on the way out of Bryce we did route 12 east all the way to the end. Man, that was a some of the most magnificent country I have ever seen. Won't soon forget that. Southern Utah is a place everyone should see.
The tunnel going out of the the east side of Zion is very cool! Built in the 30's. A mile long. No lights inside, just a few windows cut in the face of the rock.
I remember my 1st drive north on the 15 driving thru Vegas and entering Utah. Wow it's was incredible beautiful drive I look forward to driving on route 12 one day. See more of Utah.
We did that trip a couple years ago when we left LARS and headed to Pueblo. Just outstanding scenery all day in that drive.
IF you've NEVER done a trip around the US in a hot rod or kustom, you've never taken a very memorable trip. Just make sure your rod is in tip top shape and you're able to fix it on the side of the road in case of problems. I've been 'vacationing' every summer in my '40 Stude coop since 1978 (first long trip was to the Feather River rod run in Cali), I finally quit driving it on vacations aound the mid '90's when I got my '57 Chevy done...been sightseeing in and thru 39 of the 48 contiguous states. Most time, when you stop for gas and eats, YOU and your car are the tourist attraction...!!! For the last three summers, we've been going in my '55 Cadillac (now there's some road luxury)...to see the complete build, go here: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=329070&highlight=the+best+55+caddy+build This summer we're taking a two week trip, ending up in Puyallup, WA for the GoodGuy's event... Cool trip Drive'em, did that route two years ago...Utah is gorgeous... R-
readhead, Yes, I really enjoyed Durango, I'm sorta a train guy too. After the ride to Silverton I hung around the round house and watched them turn the engine on the turntable and send it into the roundhouse. That whole steam era of trains I find very interesting.
Left Limon Co this AM in a hell of a rain storm, car looks clean up front, but sides and back look like I've been mud bogging, headed to Salina, KS, ended up in Concordia, what a cool little town. Tomorrow off to Speedy Bill's museum. Trying to post more pics, still days behind on that. Here goes. #1 Williams, AZ just South of GC. #2 Somewhere on Route 66 just after Oatman, before Kingman. #3 Route 66 Bar & Grill, Williams. #4 Again, somewhere on old Route 66.
Hello Des Moines Hambers. We made it into town today. Had a really bad experience at Sterling Hotel and Suite, won't go into details, but letting Goodguys know about it. Anyway it all worked out for the best, we got rooms at the Marriott, host hotel. Went to Speedy Bill's museum, all I can say is mindboggling. He has one of the most unique collections of engines I've ever seem. If you ever get the chance to go there, DO IT!! you won't be disappointed. Met some really nice folks in Lincoln last night at the local cruise. Some of them are coming to Des Moines. Don't know if there's anything going on tonight (Wed. nite), if so let me know. Finally got the phone to email my pics to my computer, believe it or not at Speedway Motors. So here goes. **** the computer said there was an error and to let the administrator know. Oh Well maybe someday I'll get them posted.
You're doing great John and it sounds like you guys are having a great time! Hope you get the pics worked out!! Can't wait to hear the hotel story!! Jeff
Ok, I'm gonna try to post pics again. #1 Grand Canyon #2 The roadster at the El Tovar Hotel at the Grad Canyon. #3 Entering Bryce through, I think Red Rock. #4 Somewhere in Southern Utah
Just for clarification, pic three is Red Rock Canyon west of Bryce, Utah. Pic four is east of Bryce, on the way to Escalante, Utah. Keep the pics coming, I'm living vicariously through you! Closest I got to a road trip today was five hours of hand filing my wife's T roadster ch***is, but I had to drive to my buddy's shop to do it. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Thanks daddio221, after a while I can't remember which pics were where. Here's some more. #1 Somewhere in Southern Utah. #2 The natural bridges in Southern Utah. #3 Entering Colorado. #4 Crossing through a cut in a huge wall somewhere in Southern Utah. Like I said before Southern Utah has some of the most breath taking scenery I've ever seen. Sorry not in order. In Des Moines now at Goodguys Heartland Nats. More pics to come. Stay tuned
Spent 6 weeks geologic mapping the San Juans between Durango and Silverton in 1982, just love that country. The whole 4 corners region is awesome. Looking forward to more pics.
Latest post, just got in from Goodguys show. Wow I'm telling you this trip has been so *****in I can't really do it justice in words alone. We met some of the nicest people you'd ever want to meet. People have been so gracious and helpful and willing to talk to us about our trip and just really friendly. I'll never forget this road trip. Till next post, take care all.
