i did the 10 to the 290 two years ago to austin in my ranchero. took me 2 days on the way to austin with a nights stay in PHX visiting my family, my buddy and i were sharing driving duty.

on the way home he and i did it in 23 hours straight with a 2 hour stop in El Paso.

i love driving, so the drive as boring as some may say it is was fun for me. i did it with no gas gauge, i stopped every 2 to 2 1/2 hours for fueling and had no problems finding places to stop. the drive from El Paso to Austin does get a bit lonely but its a trip to see a highway go on for miles in a straight line.

i did have a weirdo in a semi toy with me for a long while from the 10fwy to the 290 in the middle of the night though. scary shit having a dummy in a fully loaded semi tailgating, swerving into, and locking his brakes on you for no reason, even though i gave him the right of way and gave him all the room he needed. even scarier when my fast little pick up can scoot quite nicely and he decided to keep right up with me:eek:

    be safe man

  3. Take the 10 back there and back. But get a texas map. There are back roads so you can get to the 10 faster to and from austin. I live in Texas for 8years. Everyone knows the back roads are faster. Plus alot more things to see and less cops too.

Ha,I thought I was the only one who got picked on because I drove something different... I've had similar events like this happen to me when im driving my older cars..It surprises me that out of all people on the road that a truck driver would play games like this... It seems like I can't drive anywhere anymore without some a-hole ruining a drive that I look forward to..

  9. I just got back from Oklahoma and went the 40 there and looked at coming back the 10 but way to many miles that i did not want to spend more $$ on gas for nothing. 40 was nice not much traffic except in the major cities and a nice kick back ride.

Hey Ian, If you decide to take the 10, you got a friend in El Paso and a safe place for your ride.

    from so . cal.

I did the I-10 route a few years ago, and it's not bad at all . Stayed the night in El Paso , had some great mexican food and no problems . The road from there on is one lonely hiway , the only excitment I had was the state trooper giving me a ticket ( 5 mph over ) . Take the 10 there and the 40 back , then you have your own experience to draw on . have a good trip !

You guys and your big scare stories give me a good laugh but I live in a town where guys get shot for stupid reasons on a regular basis and that is probably why El Paso doesn't seem all that bad. Ian, If you are scared of El Paso, Toppenish would give you a heart attack.

HAHA!!! NOT SCARED MAN, " CAUTIOUS " !!! Before I met my wife, 6 years ago...... All i did was get drunk, start trouble and brawl! just saying!!
And use to roll with members of one of the biggest hispanic gang here in L.A.....My point is" NOT SCARED TO STAND UP FOR MYSELF" .

THE 40 is still the way Joe T Creep and I are heading to Austin!! :)

I cant wait. It will be a great drive and as long as I get the hell out of here for a while I'll be happy. Even better to get to Austin to see all you guys again. And whomever we visit along the way. No matter what happens.....Ian and I are going to have a blast.

Drive carefully Ian and call me if you need anything. If you come into Austin on 290 my place is about 25-30 miles out of Austin proper in Dripping Springs. You know how to find me...
