If they do survive, I'd seriously like to know how to see what's there, +/- Billy's calendar girls. I don't know how to access any social group

I'll add that there is a lot of content (photos, stories, experiences, etc) on the HRV that may be of some value and worthy of consideration for archiving if you do decide to discontinue the social forums, and it's feasible to do so. The threads were categorized into topics of discussion. Although there were a few off-topic threads, most were on-topic.

As Ed said, I also want to thank you for allowing us a place to just hang out among ourselves and contemplate our relevance now, and remember how things were. I also appreciate all you do with the HAMB and the Jalopy Journal. I will continue to enjoy the content of all your media.

I joined a few social groups when I first started exploring this place in 2006..
After a year or so I quit checking in on them.

Alright, I dug through the database this morning and it looks like I may be able to save a few choice threads. It sort of stung that among those were a bunch of old farts talking shit about the HAMB... which, of course, is my legacy and the vehicle that provided them with their little club house to begin with. Water under the bridge I guess...

I'm not gonna mess with this until next week, but the plan is to get what seems valuable, throw it in the off topic forum for now... and move on with my life.

I really never used the "external" social forum.
Visited once or twice in the beginning.
The Main HAMB Board and it's tabs are my social forum.
If I want to additionally socialize, I send a PM.

If you have a Social forum you visit regularly, just create a PM with Names of the fellas you socialize with , send them a PM and keep that going.

Saves Ryan time /money and sleep.
Ease up @Ryan on yourself, it will all be ok. Really.

    Ryan,
Just like the last time this came up, I’m left wondering if the numbers are being undercounted. I lurk in the Northwest HAMBers group. Last week, judging from posts and likes, there were at least six unique views in that group alone (and I have no way to gauge how many read a post but didn’t like or reply). In the end, will it change anything? Probably not, but I always think decisions should be based on sound data.
I hope that the stuff in the small pages group is among what is saved.

I was a member of the 52-59 Ford sub forum and used it a lot to sort out issues on resurrecting my '54 Ranch Wagon. But I've also used the main board as well as the Barn for all kinds of help. That said, dump the sub forums and save some info if it can be done BUT don't loose any sleep (money) over what can't be saved. We will survive. JMO

If it´is a waste of time and money , that is one thing , but if it´s not even for your own fun and pleasure, but a burden, then it is time to pull the plug. I hope you can store the important topics for later, and cut everything else loose.

When I was a kid growing up in my dads wrecking yard, I cant tell you how many great cars from the 40's, 50's 60's, I had to watch go to our crusher.

I would say to him, cant we save that one, or this one?

And his response was always, look if you want to eat this evening, then understand, the money from that crushed car is helping to put food on the table!

He also said this about many things in our wrecking yard and shop for car and truck repair.
    he said,

"If it cant pay for its foot print and the space it occupy s, then its out of here"
He was wise beyond his years indeed!

I’m not much for standing on soapboxes, but screw it...

It feels like society drove off a cliff. Division is the only language anyone speaks now. Us vs. Them. If you’re not marching in lockstep with me, then you’re against me. If you don’t think like I think, you’re the enemy. The new American Dream feels monochrome.

And here’s the ugly truth: this shit won’t get fixed with politics or religion or any of that other shit we can't talk about here. The only chance we’ve got is people acting like human beings again... showing decency or, at the very least, letting people be...

In my tiny corner of the world, that’s what I’m aiming for. You don’t like me? Hate my guts? Don’t think what I do matters? Fine. As long as you’re not putting pain in my life, why should I waste one volt of energy caring? Feeding into it only fuels the fire. Ignoring the noise and putting my effort into creating something good... Well, maybe that shaves a fraction off the madness.

That’s the path I picked. Doesn’t mean it’s easy. Some days it’s goddamn brutal. But it feels like the only way forward. I try really hard not to participate in any of it on any level.

I don't think it was the "Old Farts social group" talking crap about Ryan. If it was it had to be before I was the moderator, I haven't seen it or I would have deleted that kind of crap.

I agree with you you and I am not suggesting I would want to or your should add to the negativity in any way I just wouldn't have it in me to spend more of my time and or money to help people who don't appreciate what they have here. To use a part of this place to then shit on this place then complain when it gets taken away is... well lets just say not cool.

I was one of those few trying to get into Maryland HAMBers over those days. I was pretty active there. I had no idea we were creating a problem for anyone. Since I was one of the problem, is there anyway we ( collectively ) can help with the bill you experienced ? I’m already an Alliance Member but is there any way we can help with the cost ? Not being an asshole, dead serious !

No one person was causing an issue. The feature (that I built) was causing the problem. And the functionality just isn't worth the pain anymore.

Ryan for the most part I see this decency on the HAMB forums, I see disagreements that are civil usually, when they stray the Mods jump on it. Thank you Mods.
This site/community you have created is excellent and operates at a very high level.
Being a FNG sometimes I ask dumb questions I always have gotten a very respectable and educational answer. Thank you members.
Business is business sometimes people don’t like the decisions however if they would look at the reasoning they would understand the decision better maybe even agree.
As members of this site we have to be mindful of the work required by the staff. One question I ask is If I were the the boss would I…? Fill in the blank. As a boss I never asked someone to do something I wouldn’t do and the inverse is true - don’t ask the boss to do something you wouldn’t!

Can the social forums, or at least the larger and more active ones, be archived as a "read only" knowledge base that can no longer be edited or added to? Or would that still be a liability as a security risk to the HAMB in general?

No doubt about it. The decency on the HAMB is something out of this world. I’d put money on it—line up every privately-held forum still limping along on the internet and not one of them could touch the HAMB for basic human decency. I’ve seen it firsthand, lived it, and I’ll stand by it.

My soapbox speech was a reaction to why I don't ban people that were talking shit about the HAMB on private forums. That's all.

Yep, some of the best people I have ever met in life hang out here. Good folks on the HAMB as best I can tell. :D I have recently been looking for a comparable forum to try to gain some knowledge on old (HAMB-era) motorcycles and haven't come across anything anywhere near what we have going here.

Ya gotta guard the henhouse or life gets complicated, who needs that.
Other than some of the bullying I saw in the early years when I first was watching from the sidelines, I think this joint has done nothing but get bigger and better with age, the negative of that is it can turn into a "cat herding" proposition and you can't please all the cats all the time.
Witnessed (and experienced) some of the changes here that people thought was the end of the world, was nothing but a success at each turn, and the new OT forum, brilliant idea, I've supported and enjoyed it from the start.
I'm the last person to criticize how a website is structured but from my small experience of frequenting other sites OUR HAMB forums have a lot of features you don't see elsewhere, and it's so much easier to navigate.
I'd say it's time to trim the fat @Ryan, may give you more time and energy to create content you actually enjoy, and speaking of that, the effort you put into the Cobb adventures is without equal, a torch bearer of sorts.
